22652, 16psi and 2 bent stock rods
Posted by Tommyboy, May-20-02 08:53 AM
Wazzup guys I was at LACR on fri I only got one run because I bent 2 of my rods How do I know I just took my engine apart yesterday. I was surprised how good the weisco pistons held up ,luckily I have a couple of stock rods laying around. I guess I proved how much our stock rods can handle. I'm only gonna boost 13 when I put my engine back together. stock rods over time can't handle 15 to 16 lbs. Damm I even got a messed up 1/4 mile time I ran a 14:5 at 102.98MPH thAt shold be at least good for 13z at that speed. I messed up on the launch and I was running on 17inch rims()

You are certainly a pioneer with stock 420a internals. Time for some Crowers!! or at least a set of Eagles. Get that thing running more boost! (safely)

I'd expect fractured rods next. If you put enough stress on the rods to "bend" them (or yield the metal in engineering terms), then low cycle fatigue will probably set in next. If you are consistently stressing the metal close to the elastic limit, then the metal only has so many cycles before it fractures. Don't expect the rods to last forever... that is all that I'm saying.

with that trap speed your in the 13.5 second range.......what were your 60' times? i bet they are pretty high.......

You must really enjoy taking your engine apart. And you must have another car if you can afford to always be working on yours all the time. I cant stand having my car not running.

yeah good thing I have another car I got a little 92 honda hacthback. i took my engine apart in about 4hrs my fastest so far. it takes twice as long to put it back together. so guys don't be boosting past 13lbs on stock rods thatz all I can say. I'm gonna put another set of stock rods for now till I get some eagle rods later on this summer. my car never seez more than a week of down time and thatz because of waiting for parts. after taking my engine apart more than 8 times now I'm kinda used to it pretty sad, I know ,but I'm not really scared to take it to the limits. Another lesson learned. the funny thing was I was driving on the streets all week at 15lbs no problems I guess at the track it puts more stress on the drive train. My fuel system holds up pretty good without an AFC I'm happy on that and my weisco pistons held up real good.

have you ever stregnthened your rods (ie. shot peened, cryo freeze)? I'm planning on running oh 12-14 psi on stock rods and JE pistons, think it'll hold up if I stregnthened the rods or would I be better off with buying some eagles?

If your going to go through the trouble of installing pistons you might as well spend the extra $350 on rods.

even if you shot peen them I still think they will bend at 15lbs of continious use. Yeah you should go ahead and get the rods so you won't worry about bending them when you start boosting high. the only reason I do crazy things with my motor is because I know how to trouble shoot it and take it apart no sweat. man I thought the rods would of snapped but there pretty strong for being stock. 13lbs i think would be safe on our rods. thatz what I'm gonna run from now on

Hey tommyboy what's your fuel set up? I have a Star stage II and I'm planning on putting around 13 psi.

I'm running the wallbro Highflow 255lph intank pump, 30lb ford motorsport injectors, and the most important S-FMU I love this thing it is so reliable, I use my EGT gauge to tune I see about 1500 degrees at 15lbs perfect the A/F is in green and I still have more room to richen it more but I lose power like that, I have nothing to retard and have no S-AFC. the pistons looked great when I took the engine apart. don't boost past 8 or 9lbs your stock pistons are hella week trust me on this the ringlands will crack.

...I have spare stock internals up the ass but it seems like you are always under your hood with stock replacements. I bet you can't wait till you get your rods. It will be night and day with a tough block. 15psi should give you more than 13's on a good run and slicks(if you'r running them). I'm at 15 all day long and 18 for those *special* occations. I know that at 15pounds VERY little competes with an RS with pressure. 13's should be simple when you get those rods.

skrilla are you running any kind off boost retard for the 18spi? MSD DIS-2? crane? what kit did you finally end up getting? i'm thinking of running about 18psi.

dave fl, where did you get rods for $350? I can't find anything good for that price
22667, RE: damn...
Posted by Dave_FL, May-21-02 08:26 AM
Actually I got them in the howell automotive bottom end kit... www.howellautomotive.com . Its just an estimate on the price. I know eagle rods arent much more than that though.
22668, Here's a couple of places at $349....

But I do not recommend Captain Nemo(or CNNPRACING). I've heard questionable things about him.

I am a pretty good guesser. I new they were out there for around $350. i would just get the rebuild kit though. You might as well do everything while its apart.

so...there now youve heard somethin good ;)

I have a DIS-4 wired for 4 cylinders. I've been trying all sorts of settings but I'm at 10* retard at 4500+ and 15pounds. It is too much down low but it does the job up high. At 12 pounds daily I was at 8* for shitty cali 91octane. You should be able to get away with 9* and 15pounds with your better gas. With 18lbs I leave it at 15* all the time. 440ccs go over the 80% duty cycle limit at 15lbs on 2Ls so 18 is when there is a race.I think I can do 20lbs with 15* but havent't tried it - need more fuel, and are waiting till I have the funds for AIC. The 8 setup is done though. I think more people should perform that.

so your saying anything over 15psi i should use some kind of timing retard? (no offense skrilla)
22673, RE: sup Manek...
Posted by HadesOmega, May-21-02 06:02 PM
hmm that CNNPracing piston/rings/rods combo is a better deal than howell's rebuild kit. I can buy the bearings and pump and stuff locally. hmm interesting, haha I'm sooo frugal aren't I? :P
22674, you got it
Posted by Skrilla, May-22-02 07:31 AM
I did retarding at 12 psi because of the horrible gas Cali has. I think you will need retard at 15 or higher
22675, RE: you got it
Posted by Manek1, May-22-02 08:23 AM
damn this retard! i'll just use race gas all the time. did you use a datalogger when you tuned? kinda scared to lean out my SAFC. at 15psi and -15% across the board i'm still only hitting about 650 celsius on my EGT's.

I've had cryogenically treated rods for the second motor I had and they've stood up with the 12-15 psi I was running all the time. It also helps to get two top or bottom halves of the rod bearings that have the oil groove in it and install them in a way that you get 360 degrees of that groove. I'm not entirely sure but I think only the '95s have that option. Dino can vouch for me if this is true.. I think this is what he did. If you're turbo or high compression.. ignition amplifiers and timing retard at top end will add a little more room for growth and insurance to an extent. I was like tommyboy all along the way.. pushing my motor to the limits. I'm still on my 4th motor but I haven't been driving it at all since I've been oh so slowly working on all the show mods. I just wish I had help with all the shit I want to do myself.. which is why sometimes I wish I lived in Houston or had some of you live close by. My crew doesn't do much work under their hoods with the exception of a few and of course the pro bracket racers from my crew (bergenholtz and the pro-motion neon)... get that.. we have a 10 second all motor 420a in my crew. But I haven't been hangin around so much as to swap a few words with him. I can't wait to peep out his set up.

just the 95s have that option of 360 oil deal.. unless there is some way to do it to the 96-99?
