Posted by pn0ymahal, May-19-02 04:41 PM
do i just need to look for a block/short block to redo my bottom end? also i can get any block from a neon, talon, or avenger besides the eclipse right? is there a exact model of these blocks from other makes i need to know?.. what kind of question should i ask the junk yards when i call them? so i dont sound dum?... i just want a spare so when my goes bame asap the spare goes in... and i should look for 96-99 blocks right?.. i just plan on going with the howell bottom end or hrcs bottom end depends...im not sure if i should get any port/polishing or 5 angle valve job done since it cost alot...when doing porting or a 5 angle valve job would this have any effect on my idle or so since im auto?... what should i get done to the block or head at a machine shop if i dont know the condition of the parts etc?
thanks

Your going to be looking at some down time no matter how you look at it.. a motor swap/ rebuild is like a heart operation. Do you see people getting heart implants than the next day jogging? :)

As far as looking for a block goes just call around some shops even satan just to get a quote on a 420a block. If you call junk yards ask them if they have any 95-99 Eagle Talon Esi's, Mitsubishi Eclipse RS or GS's, or dodge avengers.

Id look into a rental car if your doing a rebuild that way you have some transportation while its being worked on.

This is the best advice I can give you based on the information in which you gave me.

Also, keep in mind that Howell Automotive will now sell pre-built short blocks for around 1800 bucks. This is the block, with crank, new rods, pistons, and rings. For the price of the bottom end kit, plus machining labor, and assembly, this might be the way to go. You can have the block all ready to swap, and if your're good, you could get it done in a day or two with some help. I am going to look into this route, since this is my only car, at least when the time comes anyway. Now if you can get really good hook-ups on machine work, and do the assembly yourself, then by all means, find a block and build it. You will save some money, but not a whole lot..Just something to look into i guess..

Where'd you hear about the $1800 thing? Is that w/ core because that seems kinda low seeing how the bottom end kit is $1100 by itself.

I heard about it on Howell's site, in their forum. The post is actually made by DaveFL, when he blew his motor. Gary had replied saying that you can buy a short block pre-built for "tentativly" for around 1800 dollars. Nothing was said about a core charge.

Damn. I didnt even see Gary reply to that. I would have gone that route if I had known. Oh well the money is already spent and the work has begun. You guys that are rebuilding should look into that. Sounds like a good deal to me.

I would do the timing belt, water pump, idler pulley, tensioner pulley.

And on the head I would get a 3 angle valve job.
