22339, Can I swap my t3/t4 for a T3???
Posted by Semperboost, May-16-02 02:13 PM
I'm sick and tired of this slow ass, no low end, forever spooling turbo. I think part of the problem is the intercooler piping - so I'm gonna clock the turbo downwards and route the piping more direct. I also wanna try to get a hold of a smaller turbo cuz the t3/t4 setup is too big for a low boost application. Can I swap out my hybird for a straight T3??..What other turbos could I use for a direct bolt-on? Too bad I couldn't use a 16g or a t25 those things are cheap as dirt and I could mod it. All I want is something that spools real quick..say 2000 to 2500. ANy Help? THanks

The flanges for a t3 and t3/t4 are the same. Our turbine housing is that of a t3 and the compressor is from a t4. I had a t3 laying around here at my house for a while. The only difference between the t3 I had and the t3/t4 that caame w/ my kit was the inside diameter(if you could call it that) of the turbine inlet. I am not really sure why though, but yes, the t3 should bolt right up. justin

You can get all the parts you need to convert that to a T3 from Turbonetics. You can also get T3's for real cheap on Ebay and at the junk yard. If you find an old used one you can get a rebuild kit from Turbonetics for like $75. I am doing the same thing. Going to use a T3 instead of a T3/T4. You may need to do a little work with the inlet and outlet piping on the compressor housing. The turbine side will bolt right up. That side is T3 already.

Super 16G puwah!!!!!!!!!!! Mine actually starts spooling at 2500 RPM and hit max 4 psi at around 3500. That's about the only reason I went for a smaller turbo because I'm AT, and having a big ass turbo for low boost applications will suck ass. It's gonna take you forever to spool up.

If you want instantaneous throttle response, I'd go with a T-25.

This will solve spool up times. Buy a T3 .48 AR housing instead of the .63 you currently have.

The turbo will spool much faster and should be fine all the way to redline. We are not utilizing the turbo in high boost, so your turbo will be efficient at high rpm.

If you ever want to turn the boost up past 10 psi, you will gain more power with the .63 AR housing. Sounds you just want boost at lower rpm though. BTW: our motors hit the torque curve at 4000-6500 rpm. This is where you want boost coming on strong. if you autocross, the .48 AR housing will help you out of the slow corners. I just slip my clutch to get the rpm high and off I go.

Turbonetics will have these in stock for around $150 I believe.

Can I rebuild my turbo with the new AR myself or should I have someone qual'd to do it?? I know they sell the different trims on the Turbonetics site..is there any other places that sell compressor wheels? Thanks for all the help guys. ANother thing I noticed while doing some PM on my car is that mose of the manifold bolts are loose..bad, bad stuff..gotta have the precious exhaust gas turnning the wheels.

The compressor side has absolutely NOTHING to do with your spool. You swap a T3 compressor side with your current T04(e) compressor side, and there will be no difference at all. You've already got a T3 hotside!

You want better spool? Get a better exhaust side. All you need is a better AR and a better wheel. Call turbonetics, tell them what you have, and tell them what you need. They will help you...

lol, nice save darkone.

get rid of your cat (try to go 3" exhaust too) and get a reliable boost controller of some kind to help spool.

Has anyone ever rebuilt a turbo?..What size turbine wheel do we have? All I see on the site is Standard, Stage I, II..there is no smaller size? Thanks for all the info folks

I believe "we" have the 40 trim. I do. I have the t3/t04e bb turbo. I talked to Jerry at turbonetics about this. I asked him these same questions several weeks ago. Here's what he had to say....(my questions are usually below his response)

1st email:
I recomend a T4E 50 or 57 compressor to get good response from the turbo. A stage II turbine, and a .63 housing will get you much better response. I don't recomend a 40 or 46 compressor because they are "very lazy" at producing air flow. (Seems to be massive lag) Another choice would be the super-V T4B compressor wheel / housing. How much power do you need?

2nd email:
The larger compressor(larger no#) actually makes more peak hp.The blade design actually is what makes to 50 trim work so well. The problem is that the balancing of the turbo becomes the nightmare when making a change like that. You have a turbo rated for 350 hp. The 50 trim is rated for 475 hp.

Thanks for the information. My goal (for now) is to get around 300 whp, which turns out to be in the range of 12-14 psi typically on my car from other people's dyno results. I think what I have is way oversized (it came in a kit) from the amount of lag I'm getting, but I could be wrong... That's why I'm asking the experts. I'm assuming from your reply that the larger the number on
the compressor, the less peak power it will give (but also less lag). Would a compressor wheel change be fairly easy?

Thanks,
Matt

3rd email:
(1)Yes it does! (2)I would be very worried about balancing. Nobody has the VSR machine, Which actually spins the turbo like it was running on a car! See if your shop has the VSR machine. You don't *have* to send it to us, but we have the machines to do it right.

OK. 2 more questions and I should be out of your hair. Does the 50 trim actually have less lag and higher peak hp?
Would an automotive shop (which are limited here in KY) be able to balance the turbo, or would I have to send it back to you?

Thanks,
Matt

Hope that helps! As far as another location to buy stuff, I don't know. I'd like to find somewhere closer to send it to since I don't have the luxury of massive downtime, but I don't know of any. Let me know if you find anything anywhere else.

Matt
