22187, What gets balanced in the machine shop?
Posted by Dave_FL, May-14-02 01:21 PM
When I take my engine down to the machine shop and get it built and so on what exactly gets balanced? I have heard that the rods and pistons need balancing. Why would that be true? Shouldnt they come already balanced? And if they were not balanced how the hell would they make them balanced?

You should have the machine balance the pistons and rods. They come balanced by weight, but they're not symmetrically weighted. For example, two rods can weigh 1 pound each, in weight. However, one side of the rod might be a wee bit heavier than the other. The "heavier" side could just be the raised logo or numbers on the rod. The machine shop will grind that out.

Also, have the crankshaft balanced. On mine, the shop had to drill a few 1/8"-1/4" holes in the crankshaft to balance it. Plus, if your'e planning on getting a new clutch, have the clutch balanced too.

The whole rotating assymbly should be balanced.

That's pistons, rods, crank, pulley, and clutch.

If you have aftermarket pistons and rods they should already be balanced to within 1 gram. If they arent then balance but they should be. Only thing you need might want to balance is the crank. Honda cranks are balanced from the factory as well, dont know if I can say the same for ours.
