2191, Axles & LSD - To Snap or Not To Snap?
Posted by RS_Guy, Feb-28-01 03:34 AM
Well... Anyone been doing some snappin' lately? I really hope not!

It is inevitable that at some point most of us Turbocharged 420As need to look for better axles, and probably some sort of Limited slip system.

As far as I know, only Quaife makes a Limited Slip Differential for us.

Q: I know that a LSD is good for drag racing, and AutoCrossing,
but how does it do in wet weather? Rumour has it, that exiting
from corners (with a touch of the gas pedal) makes your car go
sideways....

I have just seen the ad for this company called The Driveshaft Shop - http://www.driveshaftshop.com/
These guys claim that they made the axles for Len Ayala.. So they do have some cred.

Q: Are Neon Axles 100% compatible/interchangeable for FWD 420A DSMs?

CNNP Racing also claims that they can make custom ones for us (Could they be the same ones from The Driveshaft Shop...?)

Q: Does anyone make equal-length halfshafts for our cars? Or is
that not even applicable for us?

Thanks,

Guy

I dont' think neon axles would work. they have different hubs, and are a different width than the 2g eclipse.

have fun!

Looks like the DriveShaftShop wants to sell Neon Axles for like
$750+ , CNNP $800ish.

Personally looking at DriveShaftShop's website, I really like how
they specialize in this stuff, and have a pretty well thought out
product.

Until recently, I didn't know what Cryogenics was, but when I
heard about it, I did some research, and also by pure chance, we
studyied it in my Manufacturing class.

Cryogenics makes a metal MUCH harder by aligning all the
crystals, however, it also makes the metal much more brittle,
which means that, it will flex LESS than stock and break instead.
That is the same reason I didn't have my rods Cryogenically treated.

The driveshaft shop axles seem to be able to flex by 7 degrees...

And as for warranties, well what concerncs me the most is that
if I DO break an axle (even if its replacement is free), what
happens to all the stuff around the axle???

One thing to remember, i believe HRC's Eclipse is running 500HP on stock axles... i don't think they've broken one yet.

have you seen what can happen to axles when they sticky up a weak traction track. I've SEEN a 1G GSX waste 3 axles as well as a Couple of Intergras. At the July 8 RRE Meet I talking to a national challenger who destroyed his front 2 from his 2G GSX. After they applied the stuff he was simply diving and heard the lil' crackling from the stuff

I have seen a broken axle caused by a 420A avenger with only intake/exhaust and way too much traction (quaife/bushings/mounts - everything) launched at 5000rpm on a sticky track. :( It happens.. My main advice is to take it a little easier on the launch and you should be ok.

Thats why slicks make it much more likely to break axles, traction combined with hard launhes is what does it and why my axles have 137K miles even with abuse (I hope someone has spares at the DSM shootout cause someones bound to break axles sooner or later).
The driveshaft shop has several stages of axles so I dont think all of them cost $800ish (too damn much for my blood).
