20918, 8 Injector Page...Finally!
Posted by Corbin, Apr-29-02 03:44 PM
I finally finished my 8 injector fuel system and built a web page detailing it.
Check out:
http://www.2gnt.com/www/corbin/8inj.html
You may notice that it is on 2gnt webspace. I have moved all of my Tech and Install pages there.
http://www.geocities.com/vttalon/tech.html and http://www.geocities.com/vttalon/install.html will always have the updated links. All of this effort for more injectors has finally paid off. The car is running perfectly (I've logged 1,000 miles on it). Perfect idle. Smooth cruising. The transition from 4 to 8 injector mode is nearly seamless. No bogging or stumbling at any points. I believe I am finally done with my fuel system. I've been switching from one setup to the next for 22 months. My fuel system is finally prepared for internals and more boost...now if only my wallet was too.

hey corbin, sounds like all the hard work paid off... hehe how much will you be able to boost with this new fuel setup? what mods would you have to do to fit this in and go?...hehe

page is awesome. i think i might do that just because its a shit load cheaper. what boost are you planning on running with those injecters?? i read the article on choosing injecter sizes but im kinda slow. around what sizes would i need to run what HRC runs but with 8 injecters instead of the 4really LARGE ones. i think the 8 smaller ones would be a bit easier on idling conditions as well. I want to run 25 psi with 100shot or 30psi. do you need laptop to control this ECI?

that's freakin tight dude! So how exactly does this benefit over getting really large injectors? Does it make the fuel mixture more precise? The secondary injectors are there for extra fuel when ya need it huh? What will this do to your gas mileage though, if say your just driving normally?

First off, way to go, Corbin. I'm picking up my extra bung'ed intake manifold today.

Second, I know there's like 3 or 4 versions of fuel rails out there. (I know, I have 3 rails and two different versions) I see you use the second rail's test port as the inlet from the first rail, but what are you using as the outlet of the second rail? And did you just plug the second rail's stock inlet?

Oh, and where did you buy your fittings for the fuel rail test ports?

Thanks and again, terrific write-up! :-)

Very nice Corbin, once again, all those engineering classes paid off.

For those wondering how this helps, Corbin can now idle and run no boost on STOCK injectors and then when it's time for high boost the larger secondary injectors kick in and he has plenty of fuel.

And here she is...

Now I just need to buy the 1:1 FPR, and hook up my EIC (same one Corbin has).

right on, i always wunderd what it was gunna look like...

if you have cruise control, whattaya do about that annoying black box?? seems as if the new fuel rail (or second one) would be chillen right where it is...

but ya, props to corbin, do other performance motors use this kinda setup, or is this like one of a kind??

seems crazy origional and unique to me..

That's why it's located at the bend. There isn't any obstruction there including the C/C diaphram.

Just from a brief look at Corky Bell's Maximum Boost, there's a couple of examples of extra injector setups, I believe in a Nissan or Mazda engine (can't remember which).

Corbin is the MAN! Besides HRC, he's probably done more R&D engineering for our cars than anyone. :thumbsup

So what are the theoretical maxes of this setup? Can you still use a S-Afc? If so, I think these combinations are possible:
235 x8 (all stock)
330 x8 (max on stock ecu)
450 x8 (max with safc)

But could you do:
450 x4 on stock rail with SAFC -and- 660 x4 on additional rail with SAFC

Or would our engine melt down with 1,110cc/min to each cylinder? }>

Thanks for the compliments guys. This project has really burned me out and I needed some encouragement.

Jason, the manifold looks nice. Looks very sturdy (peace of mind). You went about it slightly differently. Now people can see some of the options available. To answer your earlier question, I am using 2 1996+ rails. The input accepts the standard o-ring fitting and the test port is on the end. My stock feed line feeds the primary rail through the rail's stock input. I then use the test port on the primary rail as the output. The output of the primary rail runs to the test port on the secondary rail (as an input). The output of the secondary rail is a barbed fitting that I had welded in where the o-ring type fitting would have been. That output leads to the FPR. The fittings you need for the test port are brass -04 AN female to socketless male from Aeroquip. They cost $3. Fuel hose clamps right onto the "socketless" fitting.

Some other questions:
How much fuel this setup can supply depends on the secondary injectors. If you put 235's in the stock location and 550's in the extra locations, you can dump about 785 cc/min of fuel. You could run alot of boost with that fuel (if you had proper ignition timing control). If you build the manifold right, it bolts right up with no modifications.
Mileage is as good as can be expected. Tune it right and you can supply as much or little fuel as you want. I still get 24-31 mpg depending on the percentage of city VS interstate.
The object of this setup is that you don't need a S-AFC. You save that $300 and buy the EIC. You let the stock ECU control the stock size injectors (235's or 252's work well) and let the EIC control the big injectors. It was just convenient for me to use 8 of the same size injector. I can dump 504 cc/min of fuel when I want. That is enough for my immediate plans. I will swap in bigger one in the extra location when I need to. You can swap the extra injectors easily since they are on the bottom of the manifold.

Is there any concern with timing on this setup? What was the total cost of this setup? Part by part.

Excellent job corbin! I just wanna ask where can you get the EIC to control extra injectors?
20939, RE: 8 Injector Page...Finally!
Posted by Corbin, May-01-02 11:34 AM
There are several different EIC's to choose from. The one I am using is from here:
http://www.034efi.com/034SupECU.html

I did write down the price of every single item I bought to make this work. But near the end, things started going bad and I had to re-do alot of work and buy more parts. I stopped caring about the cost and threw out my price sheet. So here is a rough cost breakdown:

EIC from 034
$290
FPR from Aeromotive
$130
1996+ fuel rail and wiring
$20
Intake manifold with 1996+ fuel rail
$75
Machining on manifold
$40
Tubing to make injector bosses
$20
Accel injectors (8)
$220

Cost is comparable to S-FMU, big injectors, and S-AFC

AWESOME! And you did a great job on the web page too... all I can say is we need a hall of fame on this board and put Corbin in it.
