20636, How many built motors out there???
Posted by JustOne, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I remember when it seemed everyone was getting their turbos. Now it seems as though all the people who bought those turbos have or are rebuilding their engines. I know some people had to rebuild because of blown engines but some like me just wanted more power:)

So how many strong are we now? (Rebuild wise)

Btw If your pistons are still in good shape you can off load them on the Neon guy's they like to use them to bump up the compression in the SOHC engines!

in a word: many.

The problem as i see it, many people rebuild, increase that margin of safety and stop breaking things, and thusly quit posting as the feel they no longer need our help.

Oh well.

I rebuilt, not because I craked a piston though. I spun a bearing, and I figured I might as well rebuild it with the Howell kit while I was in there! I took out a personal loan for 8K and bought the turbo, bottom end, and accesories! No more car payment, just a turbo payment :)

I woulda been if I wasn't dumb and didn't buy a newer stock engine. I didn't have much $ and was ready to sell car cause I couldn't afford it. I shoulda taken out a loan. I guess its not so bad cause I got an extra motor now at bottom of driveway. How will I know if that engine is not a good engine to rebuild if it sits there to long? Like if rain somehow gets in it, cause that would suck if I rebuilt that motor and it was crap to begin w/.

rebuilt because I was running 8-10psi on stock internals and 103K miles. Figured it would be cheaper to rebuild before catastrophic failure. Oh yeah, I wanted more boost!

I rebuilt because I had two cracked pistons: #1 & #3. Besides having to do a rebuid right away, I wanted to boost more than 8-10 psi daily (it's just that the cracked pistons didn't give me any choice, but to rebuild), otherwise, I would've waited a little longer.

Okay I'll ask here cuz I can't get a reply in the other form

1. With the engine having new rings bearing ect. will this give a slight fluctuation in idel??? ( will it smooth out as the engine gets worn in.?)(Iam seeing between 900-1000 rpm)
2. what should my vacuum read?,
Iam seeing around 11-12hg

3.Could installing lower compression piston cause a lower vac reading?

Its been so long since I had her running I forgot what it ran like. My gf said your car has always had kindof a rough idle. thats compared to her V6 honda heh

I noticed that with the new rings and bearings, the car does idle a bit rough, especially, when it's still new. But then again, that could've been contributed by the new lower compression pistons. I didn't notice any change in the vacuum, before and after the rebuild. My car idles at about 18 in Hg, with all accessories turned off.

my car idels at 14 in vac and is a little rougher than it was stock. it did get better as the engine broke in, but its still a little rough due to the poly inserts
