20402, Custom turbo install... 14B or T-25?
Posted by dougie2, Apr-23-02 02:19 PM
I know, I know... it's easier to go HRC w/ a 16G, but what do you guys think? I'm leaning towards 14B. It's been used in a lot of custom installs on various engine types and my understanding is that it's capable of producing 50+ more HP than the T-25s. This is from dsm.org:

Max output from various turbos
TD05-14B (stock 1st gen) 275-300hp @ 21 psi
TD05-16G (small) 345-365hp @ 22 psi
TD06-16G (large) 365-385hp @ 22 psi
TD06-20G 430-450hp @ 22 psi
T25 (stock 2nd gen) 235-250hp @ ?? psi
T3 (super 60)/T2.5 hybrid 265-280hp @ ?? psi
T3 (super 60)/T2.8 hybrid 270-320hp @ ?? psi

Any suggestions? I want to leave myself the option of upgrading to 16G later down the road. Are the flanges on the 14B, T-25, and 16G the same?

I think you would be better off with nitrous.

huh?

EDIT: I have to add that's one of the strangest answers possible for my questions. Avenger- I had nitrous. I'm now going turbo. Looks like I'll be going with the 14B. I found some comparison specs and I think the 14B will work great for the $$$. It'll be upgradable to a 16G in the future. Because of the great connections I have for this shit, my total cost is below $1000. I'll be writing a complete extensive how-to for the custom install.

I think that what Armond is trying to say is that its not worth the time if you are going the 14b way. 14b is a little cost mod for us 4g63 guys with the little T 25. I know if I had an NT I would not upgrade to a 14b, I would just spend a little more and go with a T3/T4 or something like that. In my case I went GREEN hehe..

To answer your question ...

the 14b does not share flanges with a t-25 (or any garett turbo for that matter). It fairly good because you can find them around pretty cheap in good condition. Also, they spool quite nicely and they are internally gated so it eliminates the need for an external wastegate. You would also be able to upgrade to most any of the mitsu turbos (16g, big 16g, 18g, 20g, etc) or anything that uses a mitsu exhaust side. If I'm not mistaken it does flow more than the t-25 and is also able to hold more boost than one too.

exactly. From the sounds of it, you are trying to find the most cost efficient way to turbocharge your car. assuming that you have stock pistons and rods, a 14b "will" give you the effiency range you would want for 6 psi or so. only problem is that that will prbably give you a net gain of 75 extra hp safely. after thta point, you will probably want a bigger turbo, then a built motor. if you are only going after 75 more hp, nitrous is going to be a good deal cheaper, and if used properly, yoru car will last just as long as with a 14b strapped on it. t-25 is just silly.

Yeah... you're right. I'm going to go the 14B route unless I get lucky on a 16G. Actually, I'll probably hold out a couple months and save for the bigger turbo. It just seems to make more sense to do it right the first time.

I am putting a custom kit together right now and my total by the time I'm done will be around $1300,(my out of pocket will be closer to $1000 cause my GF bought my FPR and my dad bought me my FMIC) I am using the t25, shoot it will pump out more air than my poor little engine will ever use. Definitally keep me updated! If you need flanges and the such to make the down pipe call RRE, they will make you a down pipe flange for like 25$.
