20385, Turbo help--PLEASE HELP!
Posted by SlopeStyle22, Apr-23-02 10:37 AM
I jsut got my 97 GS and ive read a lot on turbocharging it, Ive decided to go with the Hahn Stage 2. I was told that I need to get a new head gasket...is this true? if so who makes one? Also I was told that I should do some engine work like new pistons and rods...is this true? if so who makes them? Another thing I dont understand is the exhaust, if i want to run 3" piping where do i get a 3" downpipe from my headers from? Who makes one? Do I have to have a certain kinf of exhaust system to run a turbo becuase i see some exhausts that say they work for turbo and some that dont, im lost on that one...help me out on waht kind of exhaust i should get to work good with my turbo. I know these are a lot of questions, but im new to all of this...thanks a lot to whoever takes the time to help me out. Oh and one last thing my friend wants to know. When I bought my GS I didnt even look at RS's, jsut didnt. He wants to know what the difference between the 2 are (GS and RS) and if all the parts that fit a GS work with a RS?
Thanks in advance,
Travis Parisi

The hahn kit is basically bolt on, no xtra parts required. If you want 3" exhaust, just get a good muffler,(greddy, apex, tenzo, ect) and take your car to a good mufler shop and have em do it. It will be a ton cheaper. RS and GS are separated by the power options, body mouldings, and rear disk brakes(GS has em). Those are the major differences. Anyone else got know of any?

RS is also about a 100 lbs. lighter than the GS!!!!

I think the main differences are:

Side Skirts;rear wiper; rear sway bar; rear disc brakes.

I have an RS with a sunroof and power everything.

Just like the other guys have mentioned, just about the only differences are: the sideskirts, rear disc brakes, 16" alloy rims, and more accessories, i.e., ABS brake option, leather, etc.

As for the turbo kit, you don't need engine work or headgaskets right away, unless it's bad. A good head gasket is the Mitsubishi MLS (multilayer steel) from the dealer. Eventually, you'll probably want to rebuild the engine with forged internals if you ever want to run more than 8-10 psi daily.

For the headgasket, get the MLS. It's not necessary but definetely a precaution. If you're doing a t-belt change soon, them change the headgasket while you're at it. Definetely do a compression check.
