20193, is 7 psi w/ a star stage 1 too much?
Posted by fabry827, Apr-21-02 05:36 AM
I just received my star stage 1 in the mail the other day. I ordered it from imports.com, and I have heard several people receiving their kits from this place minus a wastegate. Well, mine did come w/ the deltagate, no prob there, BUT, it has a 7 pound spring. that's great, 7 lb w/ a stage 1. I am trying to order a 5 lb one from turbonetics, but they have not told me how to actually order it yet, all they told me was a price, $11.00. I know there is a slight pressure drop from the turbo to the intake manifold, so I wonder how much it will actually be. I am hoping maybe about a pound or so, cause 6 psi is prob managable. Oh yeah, i do have a greddy egt and boost gauges, digital afr from gadget seller.com and a s-afc. What do you guys think? 7 psi ok until I get a front mount in a couple months? I figure i have my egt and aafr, so if it's going to run hot, I can just order the spring then. Well, thanks alot, justin

If you have a 7lb spring then your only going to get 5psi.

I knew there would be a pressure drop, but i wasn't sure how much. Thanks for helping me out, justin

it's not pressure drop it's just that you subtract 2 from how many pounds spring you get and that's the number the wastegate will open at. I thought the same thing too when I got my kit.

well if you wanted to run 7 psi on a stage 1 I would make sure you have all the gauges like AF and EGT, that way you'll know for sure. Your EGTs will probably get high though without an intercooler. I know in bay engine heat got hotter when I was stage 1.

thanks hades, i do have an egt and afr gauge. i plan on getting an intercooler pretty soon, i just hate to have to wait longer to wait for a new spring to come in. Thanks, justin

7psi is too much without IC. also need MBC to adjust boost over 5psi.

7psi is too much but didn't stop me. I wouldn't recommend it though. Heck I ran up to 11.5 psi here and there on a unmodified star+starion but since the engine is still alive I talk about all the nonsense I did when I was turbo. God bless forged pistons.
20200, Here's a question. . . .

Here's a question for you guys saying 7 psi is too much on Stage 1, How come HRC says 5 - 7 PSI Stage 1 on their web site. They also say 8 - 10 PSI for Stage 2 for you guys that are running 5 - 7 psi stage 2's ;-)

Because the Garret T03/04E turbo is a larger turbo than the Super 16g. Meaning the Garret turbo provides more power than the Super 16g, and thus requires more fuel. Remember, fuel = power. A 7 psi Garret requires more fuel than does a 7 psi S-16g.

What I meant was, I have a deltagate w/ a 7 lb spring.Even though it has a 7 lb one, I realize that i won't actually be getting 7 psi. I was just wondering how much I will actually get. Basically, I am not asking if running 7 lbs at the intake manifold is too much, because I know it is. Just making sure the 7 lb spring is ok to run for now. thanks, justin

If you buy a boost guage and run it from the intake manifold, a stage 1 will boost 5-6 psi. Mine sometimes went to 6.5 psi at below freezing temps with a cold air extension on the turbo.

I found with the dense winter (sea level) air at freezing or below, my egt would climb to 1700F if I redlined 3rd gear. There was no way I could make a 4th gear redline pull(stock injectors/12:1 fmu disc).

I would be very careful in the hot summer months without an intercooler. Your intake temps will get extremely hot and this will cause detonation even if your egt is around 1600F. In the summer, I would not exceed 1550F.

I do not have data to back up my theory. This is just my opinion. If you have any extra cash, buy a cheap 2G/1G/Saab side mount intercooler and run some 2 inch piping to your existing intake piping that comes with the stage 1. You can buy black gates 2 inch hose from any autoparts store. 2 feet is more than enough. Make the cuts in the piping as needed and just connect with the hose and hose clamps.

This should be good enough till you decide on a better side mount or front mount. You might be able to do the whole intercooler job for $125.

With the stock stage 1 and no boost controller my baby wouldn't budge past 5psi with the 7lb spring.

Hey stan. How are you liking that GTI VR6, right? A friend of mine had the 1.8T GTI and he was pushing 20psi. I think they run 12 stock?

Untrue. 7lb spring with intercooler and hes gonna get 5psi. Without intercooler, hes gonna get all 7psi like I did when I was stageI. I even saw 8psi at times without a boost controller.

hehe on really cold days or nights my stage 1 could do 6 psi If anything it spiked to 6 :)
