20169, My EGT and AF ratio gauges are trippin Posted by HadesOmega, Apr-20-02 07:56 PM
Ok this started happening ever since I installed that damn EGT gauge. I install it the first day and tap into the power wire for the AF ratio gauge. When I'm driving on the freeway it start trippin and going back and forth all over the place. SO I'm all damn what happened did the probe melt or something. I check all the connection out and then I rewire it. I solder the positive straight to the blue wire on the ignition/TT harness where my AF ratio gauge originally was and use some really thing speaker wire and ground it to where the negative battery post is connected to in the engine bay. I find out that the positive was loose. This solves teh problem but yesterday I'm driving on the freeway again checking out my EGTs, (woohoo my engine runs pretty cool) then the gauge starts tripping again and the AF ratio gauge isn't working no more. SO then I rewire it thinking its not getting enough power or something so I use a thick copper wire soldered to the blue ignition wire and use that for botht he AF ratio gauge. Then I get one of those thick copper wire and use it for the ground and solder both ground wires of the gauge to it. Damn thing still refuses to work properly and my AF ratio gauge is still dead. Sometimes I see a faint little LED on the AF gauge I tap it and the light goes on then disappears again.
Arrrghh I've just about given up, I wish this crap would just work perfectly. they're both autometer gauges also. NE1 have similar problems and a remedy? Is there any other place you guys wire the positive wire too? Oh yeah I think installed the probe wires backward cuz I had to drill the hole in the eyelet to get it to fit on the gauges screw. No biggie though right? Same colors...

It's possible that you've shorted something out, since the egt wires are reversed. The fact that you tapped the power to the A/F from the TT should not make a difference, since it is just a power source.

My EGT gauge used to go a little crazy soemtimes. It used to flicker a little. It was melted on the EGR tube. I think it was shorting out on it. I took it off the tube and taped it up and it has been fine ever since.

hmm well I didn't short it as in connected red to yellow and yellow to red. I just had the wire in reverse cuz the eyelets didn't line up withthe screws on the gauge, I thought it was no big deal and I didn't wanna take it out of the firewall and turn it around. I guess I should inspect the wire more carefully. Maybe something did melt it or something, because it happened when I was at high EGTs.

Hmm my EGT gauge is working fine but my AF ratio gauge isn't still. Is there any other place you guys wire it to? LIke the stereo or something? I don't think it likes too many things wired to the same wire.

I'm running both the Corbin A/F and my EGT off the ECU power and have no problems.

ECU power? Which one is that?

It's the wire that gives the ECU power. It's what I needed to connect to for Corbin's gauge so I already had the power run in the car.

hmm which wire is that one? Where is is exactly located is what I meant. Haha sorry if I wasn't specific enough. If you really don't know I'll try and look it up. ^_^"

well well well watta you know Dave_Fl was right. After rewiring the power wires to my AF and EGT gauges like 3 times I decided to flip the EGT probe signal wires around. So I pulled it from the engine bay and guess what I saw the jacket of the probe wire was melted off and stuck on the EGR pipe. Grr well let this be a lesson to those who plan on installing a autometer EGT gauge, watch out for that EGR tube. No wonder it worked fine for a while then when I drove really fast it would start trippin.
So this wouldn't happen again I routed the wire inbetween the washer reservoir and around teh battery towards the driver's side and connected it under the intake pipe. I must say it looks a lot better not seeing that yellow wire also :)
I think I shorted something in my AF ratio gauge also, theres some loose connection in there and it worked only after I tapped on that sucka really hard. That thing better not go out on me again. Woohoo well once I get a new ex manifold gasket imma gonna start upping the boost :)
