20073, The darkside is calling me..... Posted by Chris_FL, Apr-19-02 06:39 AM
Ok, I drove a 97 GS-T today. WOW... I've never felt anything like that before.(It was the first time I have ever driven any Turbo-charged car) He had just gotten a brand new tranny and it was like butter. Anyway, the realistic chances of trading in my car and getting a GS-T are not good. They are:
1. 97+ GS-T's are too hard to find. 2. Too much hassle. 3. I love my car too damn much. I see it like trading in my wife for a better one.(Not a bad idea sometimes...:) )
It's more fun to build up your own car. That's what this hobby is all about. Ok, I just wanted to say I WANT BOOST and I'm gonna get it. Now this is my question...(finally)
How would you compare the feeling between a stock GS-T to an NT with an HRC kit. Stage 1 or 2. I'm talking butt dyno type of stuff. I was being pushed back into the seat. I wanna know if I'm gonna get that same feeling with a kit.
Thanks and sorry for the long post. I'm going to the bank now :7

What do you mean its more fun to build up your own car? If you buy a GS-T, that would still be your own car, right?

ya, stage uno "should" pull on a stock gst... a stage dos will walk all over a stock gst...
it all depends on tunage and driver capability tho ;-)

IMO, a stock GS-T is in some ways more "fun" because of the immediate throttle response of the tiny turbo it has. As you might know, most car manufacturers tailor cars for regular people that do not care much for top end power, but low end grunt.
A stock GS-T with it's instant spooling characteristics gets its max torque right away at close to ~3000rpm's. So it's a really fun car to zoom around in for around town driving. It's not scary fast or anything, and once the turbo is spooled, that's about all the power you're going to see.
A turbo'ed 420a with a typical kit comes with a larger racing type turbo. These are the type of turbos that stock turbo people upgrade to, and in some sense may never use, because they may be "too large." When you jump on a 420a (let's say powered by a HRC kit), you start to feel a gradual onset* of power and boost at 3000rpm's until say 4000 to mid 4000 rpm's and then you really just take off like a bat out of hell. If you compare the max torque pull in the turbo'ed 420a with a stock GS-T, it's no contest, the 420a really feels like a rocket. But compare which has more immediate torque response, and again, it's no contest, the GS-T prevails.
So choose your poison. What's more important to you. Think about what your goals will be for your car and what you want with it. If you really love your current car, don't want to risk CW, will contend with FWD, willing to spend time and money on a turbo-conversion and like what I told you in regard to a turbo 420a, there you have it. If you like the idea of immediate "fun" boost in a FWD car, willing to part with your current ride for a unpredicable used one and want a hassle free life in regards to attaining a 200HP car while understanding the risks of CW, get a GS-T. If you want a street terrorizing turbo machine, and still won't mind the risk of CW, and willing to take on the necessary upgrades of a bigger turbo, clutch, and their associated drivetrain problems, get a GSX.
*When I say "gradual onset", it's still SO much more powerful than is a n/a pull, but when compared with a stock 2g GS-T, it's gradual.

That's exactly what I wanted to know Jason. My mind is made up then, I'm getting a turbo kit!

i love my gst. imo. there are alot of free mods that make the stock turbo push even harder. its gonna be a while before i can afford a larger turbo and some other stuff, but for the time being its nice knowing not too many "stock" cars can take me. but also a car is more than just one component. turbo helps, but theres so much more involved than just that. id say keep your car since youve already been working on it for a while. your always gonna think "i wish i had more", i used to with i had a gsx, but then i decided fuck it, 4 wheel drive is for trucks! :)

At 8 psi I beat stock GS-T's easily. I can stay right with my freind with a 16g on his 95 GS-T.

"stock GST" EWWWWWW...why commit such a crime...:-)
"At 8 psi I beat stock GS-T's easily. I can stay right with my freind with a 16g on his 95 GS-T." Yea and I've totaly crushed a stage 2 HRC neon......whats your point? Just because one car doesn't does not make it avg, or standard. Because I crushed a HRC stage 2 does that mean that the HRC stage 2 is slow???, I think not..I've seen guys with 20G's, t3/t4's, you name it pull shitty times and thier cars run like ass...There are a lot of variables on both sides (4g/420) as to how well a car will run. Condition of the engine, setup, tuning, driving, etc..Your statement is vauge, if you are insinuating that a stage 2 SHOULD be able to keep up with a properly setup 16G car..then I'm gonna say, "Uh huh" maybe so if the car isn't running up to par with what it should be, or other variables are involved. Not flamming or trying to start an argument, your car does it..great. Maybe your car runs stronger then normal, or maybe his car doesn't run up to par with the avg. If done correctly and the car runs good your stage 2 shouldn't be able to touch a properly tunned 16G car. A well setup 16G car should make high 280's-290's on pump gas and mid/low 300's on race gas some quite a few people have went as far as to make 300 on pump gas(stock head)... and run low 13's high 12's @106-108/FWD mid 12's awd. Been done NUMEROUS times. I've yet to see a stage 2 do that. I stand corrected if someone can vouch that on avg a stage 2 should make high 280's, low 300's. Once again not trying to be a 4g ass but just stating my opinion based on what the MAJORITY of people on the board seem to be pulling in there stage 2's.
Dino had the best post in this thread. His statement holds true for ANY car.
