19978, bent blades! :(
Posted by whodatt1, Apr-18-02 12:32 AM
well the bad luck continues! as i was going home yesterday the glue that holds the airfilter to the metal back got too hot I guess and the filter fell off! think a little piece of the glue got sucked into the turbo and bent the corner of 3 blades!! I know these are carefully balanced, how can I fix it. I will try to bend the corners back, but it will not be perfect. Any suggestions??
Thanks!

Eww, that's not cool. Although I doubt that the glue bent the blades on the compressor wheel, I'd believe that not having your filter there probably let something through that it shouldn't have. As far as fixing it I'm not sure what to say. How much did it bend the blades. I don't think bending it back is really a wise idea. You could always get a new compressor wheel and do it yourself (there is a vfaq on how to do it) or you could just leave it alone. I've seen turbos come out of cars with shaft play and bent blades and the driver never noticed it so it could (I stress COULD) be ok.

ONly 3 blades got bent and then it was only one corner in each of the 3 blades that got bent back a little bit (kind of curled up or something like that)... I know I can bend them back with needle nose pliers, but no shure if they would break or something..

i wouldn't try to bend them back, the alloy that is used is not really ductile and i'm almost 100% sure that if you bend it back you will break that corner off.

Isn't it all just part of the compressor wheel? I don't think the wheels are too expensive. Hell, might as well get a bigger wheel for that matter.

get a new compressor wheel.if not and you wanna be cheap about it,buy a half round file and file down the blades.make it smooth and you'll want to take off as little of the blade as possible. We do this all the time on jet engine compressors everytime w/ have a slightly fodded one.
