19898, A.D.P.'s theory on Detonation.

It has been added to the technical section of my website www.armond30.com This is currently the theory A.D.P. goes by in responce to detonation (may be right, may be wrong, but it is what I have seen, and it is EXACTLY why my car melted a piston). Excuse the mis-spellings. it is a LONG read, but I think it might benefit people (especially people with forced induction)

Manual grammer checked performed. Good reading and worth a discussion if anyone has any questions. Feel free to post on this thread.

well that was very informative but it seemed an answer wasn't really given for what to do...i understand whats detonation is and what leads to it, but how can i prevent it? i just melted #3 and am in the process of a bottom end rebuild. i'd love to not have this occur again, do i just monitor egt's??...how do i know exactly what level or even close to what air fuel mixture to run...i just don't want to have this melting of pistions occur again. anyone with info i'd greatly appreciate it.

it's best to monitor egt's and keep then in a "generally accepted" value, and to pay close attention to air/fuel ratio also. usigna wideband on a dyno is probably still the best way to do this. dyno in 4'th gear and get your air/fuel ration in the 12.2 to 12.5 area and watch how yoru egt gauge reacts. make sure you have ample timing retard (about 17 degrees timing advance from TDC is usu. safe for wide open throttle high power engines). A little more timing can be added to that when higher octane gas is used. normally durign street cruising, between 14.6 adn 13.5 air fuel ratio is usu safe for little/no load on the engine. The chrysler ecu will also advance timing a significant amount when less load is sensed (when car is in vaccuum and moving) so it is best to have a good knock allert (like the msd knock sensor0 to see if you are getting any significant ammount of cruising detonation. Usually, if you can keep the timing in the high teens under full load with an air-fuel ratio of 12.5-12.2, you should be in the clear (fuel pending).
