1957, Absolute best setup
Posted by emitsu97, Feb-22-01 11:36 AM
Hi turbo guys,

I was wondering if some of you would maybe help me out. I am trying to figure out what the absolute greatest, most dependable, engine friendly, power blasting, wallet savvy setup is for a Star Turbo kit? Or an HRC kit? I'm most concerned about dependability. It don't need to be flying around at mach speed in a 5 billion horsepwoer car. 220 to 240 hp is fine. I also have a an AT so that makes it a little tougher 'cause of no clutch mods. What do you guys think?
1958, do you have ABS?

WEll that means you aren't limited as to either kit. If you did have both ABS/ auto, the HRC stage 2 system might not work properly due to I/C pipe space limitation. Anyhow, having an auto may compel you to go in the direction of the HRC kit. For the two reasons, one, you will spool faster(kind of more important having an auto) and two, the T04/03 is almost a racing turbo from what I hear and has its push in the higher rpm's.

The HRC kit has a more refined fuel system and easier to manipulate instructions if you're going to do the install yourself. This I do know. The STAR kit has a lower price though, if you're budget limited. A lot also depends on how important a front mount intercooler is opposed to a side mount. The Stage 2 STAR kit includes a front mount in their lowest price, the HRC kit includes a front mount as a $300 upgrade. You could also get a stage 1 from either kit and upgrade to the intercooler of your choice and run piping yourself, thereby saving anywhere from $500-1300.

Hope this helps...

P.S. HRC has recently done a long post on how it sizes up on their system in this string .

Thanks Jason. It's really starting to look like HRC for me. I'll have to do more research on upgrades for it just so I'm positive I'm getting the most dependable setup for my car. I don't want any fires or major problems like that. I'll most likely get my local tuner to install it for me since he knows what he's doing and I don't want my car crippled for 2 weeks while I fumble my way through the install.

a GST or a GSX 1G or 2G with 16/20G, injectors, DP, intake, FMIC, exhaust, boost and fuel controller for less than 4G plus car... will do 12s daily :}

... just my take...

You are absolutely right! But a 420a with that amount of money invested will do about the same or even better.. think about this.

Turbo kit stage II w/ stock internals = 13's
built up internals + injectors & fuel comp = 12's easy +++

just food for thought!!

i think the best purchase if you're not intersted TOO much in looks is a 1g awd. the 2g's have too many problems and the possiblity of having a blown engine at less than 50k exists, thats ridiculous.

it seems that most 420a turbo people eventually (have to ) build up their engines.

but hey, its cool as phuk(to say the least) to have a neon motor that can go faster than a corvette :)
