19292, EGT too high!
Posted by whodatt1, Apr-08-02 02:37 AM
well finally installed my egt and got the car dynoed.
I know that the car runs a little rich from the A/F gauge (.93)
but when I drive around I will not even hit WOT and the EGTs are already at 800 Celcius, not farenheight (apex gauge). I can be on the highway and not even be boosting and my egts are at 800 when I'm around 3500 to 4000 rpm! what is going on???

If you can translate those numbers into farenhight I could compare them to my numbers. I dont understand celsius or kilometers.

800 Celcius = 1472 Farenheit...that's a safe temp, what is it under boost?

i have a celcius gauge and mine reaches 750-800*C on the highway with not being under any boost, I'm rnning rich too, though. I believe it's fine, just u don't ever wanna see that gauge get close to or past 900*

ok... hopefully it will not keep going up. Thanks guys. did not know it the temps should climb that fast with no boost.

my egts were aroud 1400 when i drive on the freeway for a long distance. At first it will sit about 1250 or so then as i stay at about 75 it went to almost 1400 after about 40 miles or so...

Same here. It's normal. Reaching ~1400 on the freeway in vacuum is totally normal.

Yeah my car runs at about 1400-1450 on the highway. When I first start accelerating slowly it gets up to almost 1500 then drops down to 1400-1450 after a few seconds. I guess thats normal. I have a problem when I mash the pedal when cruising on the highway. My car gets up to around 1600 very fast when I floor it on the highway. I am not sure if it will hold at 1600 or not because I dont want to push it too hard and mess anything up. I dont like to race on the highway anyway. I really need to get the vortech sfmu and then get the 30lb injectors like Deanod has.

woohoo can't wait to get my EGT tommorow and install that sucka and join the EGT gauge club!!! :) dang I didn't know it was that high on the freeway, I always thought the car ran fairly cool because of the airflow and coolant moving faster and stuff. Maybe that's what killed my engine, I LOVE to highway battle. I think maybe I broke my engine when I did a hillclimb against a GT eclipse at WOT the whole way. The AF gauge was full green all the way!

well took her out again for a boosted run and the egts shot up! up to 900 at WOT but not redlining, quickly shifted and they came down, but did the same thing in every gear... any ideas? got some fuel injector cleaner, will put that in today.
guess I have to get the larger injectors... and 8:1 disc or just get the SFMU.

I have talked to Bill about this and he said as long as it sits at 1600 its ok. When it starts to go over 1600 or 900 in your case I think you have to let off. I have hit 1650 before whern i was stage 1 and ran 8 psi...It was when I first put on the turbo kit and was tuning it.

Geezus thats too much. I used to be that high, then i tossed in 450cc/min injectors and 1:1 regulator, now i'm going 80mph on the highway and dont see more than 1200F!

If i am WOT heavy at max boost (~7.5 psi), i dont even go over 1500!

Before when i was with the crappy cartech regulator and 270cc/min injectors, i saw 1600F when WOT every time.

Oh yeah, i got a SAFC + corbin boost mod.

If your not even hitting 1500* on a WOT run, your running pig-rich. lean her out and pick up some ponies

yes but i rather save my engine then melt it away. Some of the temps mentioend here are a bit too hot for my taste

running too rich can be a bad thing... my gauge reads 1600F, and i get afterburn in the manifold i guess from running so rich, and it will swing past 1600F if i'm not careful... we all need to meet somewhere and dyno tune for many many hours, hehe... my average o2 voltage is .98 at IDLE!!

a NA 420a runs the same egts your running...

that is what I don't get my egts are at 900 but a/f is at a steady .93 at WOT!

EGT reading at low rpms and off boost are usually as high as full boost and high rpms. It is harder on the engine and causes more knock. As mentioned earlier, your EGT temps will be about the same regardless if you make boost or not. That is normal.
