1922, turbo/exaust opinions Posted by sean, Feb-21-01 05:25 PM
I really have no idea what I want to do as far as my exaust setup goes for when I get the turbo. Here's some background on whats fueling my fire. My girl friend has a 95 TSi AWD so I drive it all the time. The AWD has spoiled me, I can launch at 6000 at only get and quick tire spin and I'm off. I was talking to one of my friends who has a 1g FWD and I told him about my quest to have my turbo be at 8psi by 1700rpm (it was a joke but none the less) so he told me I should drive his car first then see if I wanted boost that quick. So yesterday we went for a spin, wow. His car made over 260@wheels like two years ago and it has had things added since so it was pretty quick (mid 13's on street tires). He just kept telling me to floor it and everytime in 1st and 2nd it just spun the tires and had huge torque steer (I don't think the lack of power steering helped) and it went no where, no increase in speed, nothing but wheel spin. I've driven others cars that have had good power but never a FWD and I was not ready for that. I know that me flooring it was not the way I would drive for real but rather a test to see what would happen if I built boost that fast so my question has nothing to do with eleminating wheel spin but rather turbo spool up time. So here's my question with the s16g and my AT should I bother with a full 3" turbo back or use the stock down pipe into a 2.5" cat to a 3" cat back. I know I want the APEX'i N1 but I'm not sure what combination of parts will work best for my setup. Should I just go all out with the 3" turbo back and learn to drive it or is it over kill for my AT car.

Im not sure which turbo kit you have but on the T4/T3 setup the exhaust housing outlet is about 2.25" ...and im pretty sure the 16g is somewere along those lines. The setup that im using on my car is a turbo-back 2.5" madrel bent exhaust. I dont believe a 3" system will be that much more effiecient over the 2.5" especially since im not using a catalytic converter..

you have an AT right?
then you don't want to go 3" turbo back, I would go 2.5 turbo back. why? cause you have an AT and you need some back pressure to get the car to move off the line or otherwise you will have turbo lag.
key word, with an AT you wan't to have some back pressure to get the TC to spool up and also to keep some low-end.
I also have an AT GS-T tho, and ran my best time running 16G and 2.5 turbo back, I had 18G and 3" cat back and ran a full second slower in the 1/4 mile.
I hope that helps

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know. I was just confused over whether with the turbo the need for some back pressure would still apply with the AT. A full sec, WOW what a difference.

yup with 18G and 3" cat back I was only able to run 14.5@98 mph, now I run 13.5@106 mph with shitty 2.28 60ft and that was with small 16G and 2.5 turbo back on street tires and totally stock bottom end, head, and AT.
here is a tip, you don't wanna lose any low end or otherwise you will bug like hell of the line, unless you use like 50 shots of NOS to get you going of the line till the turbo spools up.
good luck man
