18989, My car choked on the dyno!! :( (LONG and PIX + MOVIES)
Posted by HadesOmega, Apr-03-02 04:46 PM
Ok dyno day didn't go the way I wanted it to. I take my car to the dyno after going to my friends house. They strap it in good and run it. They run it in 3rd and I said up to 7000 RPM. So all is well it's running it's really loud and smelly and I hear a sputtering and popping the car starts moving around a bit. I'm like WTF!? They take it for another run and bam same thing happens. I'm like in despair now, 3000+ mods for nothing. They said around 5000 rpm it just doesn't got no power. I'm like NO way!!! and I ask what my fuel ratio is and he just sez "GREEN." I'm like hmm that's not right cuz the other dude is saying I'm running out of fuel. How the heck do I run out of fuel when the AF ratio is green, I'm running super rich, I smell gasoline when I change my oil, etc... Plus I only ran 5 psi. I'm like dang somethings up. THey run it again and same crap happens. I don't think my car like the dyno haha, I shoulda just gone to the strip. :( He said something about a Super AFC or new injectors. All I could think of WTF 5 PSI of boost that's nothing!!! So I drive off feeling like it's the end of the world.

Then after I watch the video I'm like what the heck happens. I drove to my friends house b4 I went to the dyno and that was like 1 mile away. The engine was warm when they dynoed it though and 3 runs with the same results shows consistency. My car has trouble starting up though like when it cold and it stutters and loses power. It's probably from a dirty intake manifold though. So I drive home and I redline that sucka on the freeway I gave the poor 420A hell. I'm like no power! no power! I hit like 100 in a few seconds. I see cars zooming behind me. I redline it in 3rd and the AF meter reads green all green super rich! No fuel problem. Thing is running like a champ! Arggghh I can't figure out why it didn't do good on the dyno. Maybe it's the fuel filter I haven't changed it in 2 years. If the car doesn't run reliably at 5 psi I don't know what to do, get new injectors? SAFC? I don't know what do you guys think? Man I planning on getting the EGT gauge soon and boosting it higher but not so sure anymore. Might need a tune up.

Here are some pix I took:
Look at that fat turbo on that civic! Haha it's the same as mine. Nice exhuast manifold, where's the rest of the turbo system thougH?

That's my car on the dyno.

Booo looks at those weak numbers, the 420A gave up before the turbo gave it some juice. :(

Well here's what it should look like if the graph kept on going at an average rate. That looks bout right to me bout 200 HP right?

Haha this is how it should be!!! :P

that sucks man. I was looking forward to seeing some good numbers. To bad you did'nt have a data loger hooked up to it durring the run so you could of seen what was going on. You can hear in in the 2nd and 3rd run how its being held back

The way your dynos look is the way my car felt when I had broken a rocker arm on one of the exhaust valves.

Boooooooo...hisssssss.....hahaha just kidding.

I would probably say it is you plugs, or wires. they are probably being fouled under load, and sputter during 3rd gear pull.

Pull and check it out. If not it is probably the fuel filter.

hope this help.

yeah think it could be the plugs, I haven't checked them in a while. If they're all black and crap the next time I take em out time for new plugs. I guess time for full tune up. Haha I think it is getting too much fuel! Oh well I shoulda prepared better for the dyno :( I totally forgot about my plugs, I keep on going I should check them out it's been awhile then I forget. :(

After watching Video 3 it sounds EXACTLY like my car did with a broken lifter. You may want to take an hour and pull the VC and see how the valvetrain looks.

Ya dude...I'd just check the regular stuff...ie. Plugs, plug wires, oil, fuel filter, vacume lines, air filter ( oh ya, why not run the car without the air filter when your on the dyno??? ) any way, IC piping...ect...Good luck!!

Those videos look sweet though, just an Eclipse on a dyno looks cool:P

haha I really wanted to see what power I put out just driving around everday so I left the filter in. I wish they let me sit in the car when they did the dyno at least. That woulda told me something. Oh well haha at least I got higher numbers than stock 2GNT! 112HP I believe it was on Import Tuner?

You know what my car has a lot of torque according to that dyno chart, I wonder why. We're suppose to have less torque than HP right? Then again it kinda crosses each other at 4.4 rpm, oh well that's good though I need that torque to spool that turbo anyway.

Haha it's is cool and it's really loud and stinky, I was right next to teh passenger wheel when it was spinning whew it spins fast!

hmm maybe I'll take the valve cover off when i got time. But I'm afraid of not installing it correctly. I hear people get oil leaks and stuff... I'll check the plugs first though sounded like it was misfiring haha me and my friend were joking that it sound like the misfiring system on the Lancer EVO3 in Initial D second stage :P

Well folks here's a lesson to be learned, tune up the car before you take it to a dyno! but dang the car runs great, maybe I need to drive another turbo 2GNT to compare.

Hmmm so do you think that you are really making more power than the dyno says in your current state? Or are you only making that much horsepower but it feels good? I think you should definitely figure out what's wrong, because from my experiences, dynos should just tell you how much power your car is making in its current state. Good luck.
18998, RE: My car choked on the dyno!! :( (LONG and PIX + MOVIES)
Posted by HadesOmega, Apr-03-02 07:55 PM
well it's definately faster than it is NA I'll say that. like I said I drove it on the freeway it didnt' lose any power. I made a better graph with projected horsepower like the 2nd graph I have up but I added numbers and lines to make it more accurate. According to my projections it'll puts out about 180 HP, I wouldn't rely on my torque projection. But dang 180 HP with stage 2 5 psi, AFX pulley, 3 inch exhuast, BB, e-trim, intercooler, etc.... doesn't make sense. I was hoping for 200 the engines low 170 compression doesn't help at all though, time to turn up the boost :) . But I guess it's not entirely accurate.
Yup I measured the lines near perfectly.

Acording to Wyatt's stage 1 run it peaks at 6.5 so that's how I got that 180 figure. Since the torque was about the same as mine but started dropping at 5k I wouldn't rely on the torque projected line.

Haha sorry guys for all the pictures, I compressed them as much as I could but they take up a lot of screen space haha especially my sig....

Dont accept those #'s.. something has to be up.. when I dynoed mine 2 weeks ago, I was making 135 the way I had it tuned, and thats with an auto.. after a few more runs and a new fpr, I was making 158, thats hrc stage I, afx udp, and a gst muffler.. and an auto..

I wish I could help find the problem, but there definately is one..

one interesting thing though, even at 158 hp, I only got 130 pounds of torque..

anyway, good luck!

damn.. I just remembered.. mine would run rich to 5k rpms then run very lean to redline..

I spent 4 hours on the dyno, and after 2 they swapped my fpr for a diff. cartech, and that solved the problem.. also check your check valve, make sure its working correctly..

hope that helps

yo Hades where did you go for the dyno man?
did any of you see that thing that corbin is sellin that attaches to a SAFC to let it see boost in our cars do you guys think it is worth it.
by the way Hades if you got time can you help me install my turbo when i get it.

yeah it's a mystery to me right now. Won't know till I start doing some major maintenance on it. Hmm I haven't checked my timing belt in a while, maybe tooth broke off and bent something.

The dyno was in San Jose at Thunder Alley Speedshop. It's on Monterey road kinda near to the santa clara fairgrounds. On wednesdays it's 50 bux to dyno so that's why I went. normally is 80 and 100 if you wanna tune. Most dyno shops cost 125 so it wasn't a bad deal. At least I know wassup now.

Sure I'll help you install the turbo if you don't live too far from me, it's gonna take a long time. And just to warn you I spend a lot of time BSing and looking for tools. Like I'll just stare at the car for a minute or something :P

Nope I've never heard of that thing you mentioned that connects to the SAFC. Sounds interesting got a ling to it?

Heheheh YAY! ... someone else to hang out in the damn-ouch-slow-painful dept with me.... a little while ago, I went to the track and blasted out a whopping 15.9 best time on my HRC stage2 :) Some of the NON turbos were running 16.2's. ARRRRGH. Mine turned out to be cracked piston, and HRC fuel problems tho.

My guesses:
Are your spark plug wires shorting out? I read somewhere the Magnecores tend to break down and arc to ground after a while on the 4G63, maybe on ours too?

Could also be fuel or knock cut. Watching fuel press. or datalogging fuel trims and ignition advance would show you.

Ok here's wassup I did a little tuneup/maintenace when i got home from school. Hell I even bought myself a compression gauge, arrghhh sooo freakin damn expensive at least I don't have to borrow one from someone anymore. Hehe ne1 around me that wants compression check I'll do it for 5 bucks on a 2GNT of course not no ferrari or viper! :P

Anyway heres some interesting number I got:
Plug Wire Resistance:
#1- 1.87
#2- 1.36
#3- 1.34
#4- 1.87
I have no idea what measurement this was but it's like 20k Ohms. Ok chiltons sez 8k ohms for plug resistance? What's up with that I'm guessing those plug wires are good? Why are the center ones 1.3 and the outsides ones 1.8 though? Ghetto! NE1 got any suggestions on this?

Coil Pack:
Primary Coil resistance: 0.00 (bwahhaa sounds good to me)
Secondary Coil resistance:
1 & 4 = 13.91
2 & 3 = 13.91
Well that rules out the coil though spec is 13.5 on the secondary

Spark Plug condition:
#1- Over gap, Carbon on rim, greyish/white electrode tip
#2- Same as 1
#3- coated with oil up to threads, black (I couldn't really tell if it was carbon fouled because of the oil, OH snikes!!! Oil fouled!!!)
#4- a little oil, black carbon rim, greyish/white electrode
Well cylinder #3 has certain issues, and I'm running really rich! Plus the gap is a little big (bad! hadesomega for not doing this sooner) How come the rim is black and the electrode tip white?! Ok here's what the chilton's sez about oil fouled plugs(indicated engine with worn piston rings and /or bad vlave seals allowing excessive oil to enter chamber.).

Compression:
#1- 150 psi
#2- 135 psi! 150 psi w/oil
#3- 150 psi
#4- 153 psi
Jeez these are lower number than the last compression test. At least 3 of the cylinders are close to each other but uh oh #2 is out of the game! I added oil and bam 150 psi!!

So this is what it looks like to me... Cylinder #2 piston rings are worn out, cylinder #3's valve seals are worn out. Whats up with the plug wire reading also? The electrical system seems fine. Hmm well fuel is definately not the problem if it is I'm running TOO rich, black plugs and when I started my car I could smell the gasoline from the muffler. Looks like I gotta tear open the valve cover when I get time also. damn it's been a bad week for me all sorta bad things are happening now :(.... Well any suggestions? I guess I should lay off the autocrossing, drag racing, highway battling, and mountain running for awhile huh? At least that dyno did some good eh?...
19006, RE: My car choked on the dyno!! :( (LONG and PIX + MOVIES)
Posted by eclipsekaiser, Apr-04-02 06:54 PM
You plug wire resistance reading os okay. Mainly the varation between 1, 4 and 2,3 is due to the distance.

seems liek you problem is fouled plugs at high RPMs.

heh yeah I better get those replaced next week, I think next weekend I'm gonna tear open the valve cover and replace the plug seals and gasket, then install new plugs. I can check out the valvetrain while I'm at it, but darn I don't know what to do with that low compression on #2. I guess I can redo the compression test like after I run it on the freeway so I can get a nice HOT compression test :)

Damn dyno's are the devil. My results also weren't good (197HP 10 1/2psi). Guess it aint bad after doing a compression test w/ 2 bad cylinders. Thank god u didn't blow on there like I did. Im kinda scared to go back on dyno w/ then new motor after spending some $.

PS Tomorrow Altered is having an open house where their gonna dyno Supras only. Ill post the results and hopefuly see someone get over 800HP. Blast the Supras. Ill tape it also

I had 197 HP on 8psi with a blown head gasket.
