18754, S-AFC settings
Posted by Erik, Mar-30-02 12:42 PM
Hey all! I decided to put my SAFC in tonight. I tried the link on the mods page so I can get this thing going right but it's not working. I have set the car to 7 in and out and 4 cyl. That's it. I haven't tried to start it yet, because I was hoping to get maybe a general set of settings for a Stage I w/ stock injectors running about 4lbs. I had purchased this used and was concerned that I would get the settings from the last car-which I don't want. Does it retain those settings from the previous owner? Thanks

Alrighty. I got the car started and the thing initialized. It ran like ass. I mean the idle w/ 7in 7out was kinda funny, so I switched it to 6in 6out and it was SUPER rich. I got some black smoke. I tried fooling around with some of the websites but nothing is much help. What settings are you guys using so I can get this car going well enough to drive back to my college home (100 miles)? BTW I'm a S-AFC newbie and the instructins I got were printed by copier so they are not the best.

It's kinda hard to determine what the S-AFC settings should be without knowing what your fuel pressure is set at. Do you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator or any kind of FPR? It you have an adjustable one, how much is your base (idle) fuel pressure? If you don't have an adjustable FPR, are you running your stock FPR?

I have still the stock fuel pressure. I just have the Star I w/ the riser. I'm trying to put money aside for fun gauges like that. I could never get it to go. I tried 7in/out,6in/out setting everything to zero on the Hi/lo settings so I would get stock readings since I still use stock injectors. All I got was black smoke and a super rich cond. I never had a CEL either.

What about your fuel pump? Is it stock or do you have a different setup? I can't imagine why you'd need to lean the fuel system if you have stock fuel injectors and FPR, but if it's really rich, then try leaning the LOW setting by about -3 across the band. What are your LOW throttle rpm settings on the S-AFC? For example, is it like: 1k, 2k, 3k, 3.5k, 4k, 5k, 6k, 7k, etc.

I have since took out the S-AFC but I have the Star kit that came w/ the Walbro pump and 12:1 riser. Dino had informed me to set the whole deal back to zero on the Hi/Lo settings and that would make the car run like stock(which is what I wanted). So I guess my question is why did it run so terrible and rich with those settings? I did not get a CEL 14 (Map) so what else might I have wired wrong. I'm leaving myself to believe that something wasn't right with something I did. If I had got the two grounds backwards, would this had happened? I'm pretty persistent on trying to get this going but I'm going to wait until I have alot of time to work with it.

I'm not sure if there's anything wrong with your hookup, but the Walbro by itself will definitely make your @ idle very rich, since you don't have an @idle FPR. I believe with an S-AFC, and with about a -10 at the 1K rpm, your car should idle a lot better. Of course, you don't want to just do a -10; just start out from about a -5 at 1K rpm, etc. Also, with a 12:1 disc, I'm sure the high throttle rpm settings could use just a little bit of leaning out, too.

That makes a lot more sense. I didn't even think about the pump richening things up that much. I figured I would still have stock fuel pressure or around there at 1k though. I'm going to give it a try maybe on Sat. or so. My roommate's truck just crapped out, so I have to help him out just incase I need a ride to classes! Does anybody have a WORKING link to Guy's write-up on tuning the S-AFC?
Or does anybody live near Pittsburg, Kansas and want to help me out? Haha yeah right like people actually live near Pittsburg!
