18612, EGT and Fuel questions at WOT Posted by Dave_FL, Mar-28-02 04:50 AM
Heres the deal....I was on the highway this morning racing a 99+ turboed SI. He beat me by the way. I think its this guy that runs low 13's. Hes got a built motor and shit. Anyway...I had to let off because my EGT's get way to high on the highway at about 90-100mph in 4th gear or higher. I am hitting over 100psi of fuel pressure. I dont know exactly how high though because my gauge stops at 100psi. But it goes over the 100psi mark. I am guessing about 105-110psi. So here is the numbers. Highway driving at full throttle...
Egts...I had to let off because they hit slightly over 1400 which is~1600 (I have my probe in the downpipe)
Fuel pressure...a little over 100psi maybe ~108psi.(gauge doesnt read over 100psi but the needle was passed the 100 mark)
Speed..90-110mph
boost..8psi
So what can be making it get so hot? Is it that I am running too rich? Maybe after burn? If I let off the throttle a bit I can get the egt's to drop down to around 1200 which is about ~1400 on my gauge. But when I floor it it gets really high again. This whole fuel issue and high EGT issue is getting on my nerves. I want to be able to go at WOT on the highway. I have zero problems on the regular streets but on the highway my EGT's go through the rof if I race.

Move it to your manifold, buy some injectors and an SAFC.
Try adding a litle more boosted fuel pressure, too. I beleive the gauge in the engine bay will read over 100PSI? Throw it up on your windshield and give it a few runs..

I did have it in my windsheild. I think it was because my idle fuel pressure was up to 60. The damn fpr was just acting up again. I set it at 50 psi at idle and it seems to be holding for now. It also hits right at 100psi at full boost now. Hopefully things will stay how they are. I wont be able to test it out for EGT numbers untill later tonight or tomorrow morning though.
About moving it to the manifold.....The only way to do it is to drill a hole in the manifold and I really dont want to take off my turbo right now. I think I'll place it in the manifold when I do my rebuild. Should be around august. I just cant wait. It sucks to get beat by a honda. Even if it is a low 13 second honda.

Damn,I'm having the same problem.I'm boosting more w/ more fuel too,but same problem nonetheless.I see 1500 @ 80 MPH on WOT.I have yet to go 100MPH cause of this. But then again,my afc is set to 0% @ 6000 rpm and 5% @ 5000rpm's.Too rich?I'd hate to find out the wrong way.

u dont have to remove the turbo to tap the manifold. i did mine w/ everything on the car. just drill while the car idles. the exhaust will push all the shavings back out while u drill. just start w/ the smallest bit u can find, and work your way up, size by size, until u have the hole the correct size. watch for flying metal scraps, they will come flying back out, lol, almost took out my buddy's eye

This sounds like running too lean to me. At 8psi, HRC specifies like 120 psi of fuel pressure. You also HAVE to have your idle FP set at 47-55psi, or you'll run into flow volume problems at high pressures.
Should be easy enough to fix- unscrew the brass needle valve on the FPR, 1/2 turn at a time to raise your boosted pressure. Watch your EGTs, A/F ratio, until you get something comfortable. (If this makes it worse, go the other way with the needle valve :))
Darkone's right tho- at some point this process becomes really annoying. Anyone have 30lb injectors for sale? tia
