Good job :)
The pain will be worth it. How long did it take you and what kind of a setup are you running?

took me 3 days. i now have JE 10.5:1 pistons, eagle rods, ported/polished head, stainless swirl polished valves. HRC stage II with FMIC, 30# injectors, AFC, AVCR, SFMU, AFX underdrive(coming off tomorrow doesen't work good on my car and setup), Blitz power meter. gonna drive around tomorrow to break the rings in faster. lates james

you manage to have it done ahead of schedule...pretty cool. Those eagle rods look so much beefier than that stock Molys.
Too bad I couldn't have helped much. I know you didn't like to have bolts and parts move around.
I forgot to pick up the fuel mapper from you. Next time. We need to go hunting in you car now.
Oh and thanks for the tip on the BOV and that stupid creaking sound. The BOv now sounds like a damn pigeon...:P

Hey James, this is Karl (Mike's (pn0ymahal) cousin with the black Eclipse). Congrats on your rebuild. Why did you get 10:5 pistons? Isn't it kinda high for a daily driven turbo car?

with fine tuning-fuel/timing it will be one fast car hehe... james lets go put some 100octane in the stock looking beast? =) only $4.25gal hehe

Well, the UDP when it is in my car it is fine when i am driving, but at stops the voltage drops to below 12 volts. I have a voltmeter that is hooked up to the internal regulated voltage and it has an alarm that is set to beep when the voltage falls below 11.5 volts. Well in the day it is okay sometimes, but when i turn my stereo on (1300 watts) the voltage drops below 11.5 volts. At night it is worse cause the headlights are on and it drains even more power. Given that I have a hell of alot of gauges and alot of other electrically driven parts it just don't work as well as it used to. anyways it causes this vibration in my car at certain sppeds that seems to hit the resonant frequency of my glove compartment and it shakes that thing like crazy...can't have that...anyways, i like the way it feels with the stock pulley after i put the turbo in. it keeps the revs up between shifts so i can keep it in that sweet spot easier. I did feel alot of difference with the UDP when i was N/A, but in all honesty, i didn't feel much difference when i took it off after i put the turbo in. Karl, i chose those pistons because they were the closest to stock compression. and i didn't want to go the low compression high boost route like alot of other people do. i wanted more power off boost also. I am planning on running 12 psi of boost daily, with a msd dis-2 programmable unit so i can retard the timing. i think that this is possible whith some tuning, and i think it will be rather nice. I believe this should put me over 300 hp and when i feel like it i can go to that 76 station and ge 100 octane and turn up the boost to like 18 pounds and see what that feels like. hehe okay man i'll talk to you all laters lates james

Hey congrats! It's good to hear about people rebuilding thier own bottom ends. Just breaks my heart to hear about the money pissed away into building an engine that they could have done themselves! Send me an E-mail I'll take your UDP off your hands if it's a decent price.

how'd you do the rebuild by yourself? Did you take the engine out or did you take the head and the oil pan out. Hehe I never mind doing my own work on my car, but engine rebuild sounds like a bit too much.

17958, RE: owwww pain everything hurts! Posted by jamesman, Mar-19-02 10:48 AM
i left the block in the car, unbolted the head. miked the cylinders, and i was exceptionally surprised! i have 90000 miles on my car, i always used mobile 1 or castrol syntech in my car from day 1 when it was new, and when i opened up my cylinders there was still cross hatching on the walls that i could feel, and there was NO ridge to ream. there was a small ring of carbon on the top of the cylinder which i cleaned off but there was absoulutely no ridge, and the bore had basically no wear! i could not measure a difference in the bore with my indicator. well, i was going to get it bored .020, but after i saw this i felt it wasn't necessary. so i got standard bore pistons. you have to unbolt the tranny/clutch housing in order to get the bedplate out or else it ain't gonna happen so i did that and then put the motor mount on the passenger side back on and did all the work with the block in the car. honed the cylinders with a flex hone and then made sure all the bearing clearances were okay and then threw that crap back together. so far it works really nicely. smooth idle, nice pickup, and nice constant exhaust tone. i like it! hehe lates james
