17807, damn swivel joint oil line.....grrrr.....
Posted by RyaN95i4, Mar-15-02 06:17 AM
so im finishing up putting the SFMU in today, everythings going awesome. car started up 1st time (should have known somethign was going to happen then), no leaks, nothing, so im adjusting the idle and static fuel pressure when some guy walks up and starts talking to me (ive met a lot of people just by working on the car out in the parking lot, lol).

while im talking to him, i notice the swivel joint (where the oil line comes to the turbo) has a small leak. so since i have the wrenches right there, i go ahead and tighten the bottom part, then the top half leaks more, so i tighten the top, then the bottom leaks, im like wtf. i finally get both to stop leaking and i go to give the bottom part a lil extra 1/8 turn like i always do, and SNAP! the fucknig thing broke in half.

of course the engines running, so i run tot he cabin and shut it off, but of course, thats a pressure line, so oil is all over the place. everything in the front of the engine is soaked in oil: radiator, fans, block, a/c, exhaust, turbo, manifold

gawddamnit.....

sorry for the rant, but this literally happened maybe 10 min ago...fawk.....

ANYWHO, does hahn sell those fittings individually? or is there anywhere else i can get them? luckily i was able to get the threaded part out using a alen wrench

(fawk...UF just lost too....gawddamnit.)

Take it to the coin carwash, tie grocery bags around *everything* electrical, maybe spray some engine degreaser on the bad parts while you're bagging... then use the engine/tire foam wash, and pressure wash rinse. Careful not to bend the radiator fins. I got rust in my spark plug wells now tho because of this, but I've done it 5+ times with no problems. She'll smoke like a biatch on the way to the carwash tho hehe.

You could have the engine professionally steam cleaned too, but I have never found a place that does that where I live now.

Sorry about the oil spray man, I feel your pain. ;)

Jeez, that had to suck...

On the plus side, it's a good thing the turbo was not super hot, you might have had a fire.

Gunk Engine Degreaser is cheap and effective in these cases: just protect the paint on the body, as it can also cut into wax and cause streaks if allowed to sit.

yea, sucked big time. i was just about to take her out for a test spin too (30lb injectors and the hahn 12:1 fpr dont work to well together, lol, just a *lil* rich on top end ;) car was faster at 1/2 throttle than full throttle, lol. the sfmu w/ a 5.4:1 disc was supposed to help that out).

i guess im lucky this happened while i was still in the parking lot here, and not @ the parts store or something (i was on my way there to get some vacuum line).

it was smoking somethin' fierce for a couple minutes after i shut the car off, lol, the people around there prolly thought i caught the damn thing on fire

ill try some of the gunk engine cleaner, but since i have no other means of transportation, itll be sitting there till that piece gets here thursday, so maybe a lot of it will drip off this week...
