1760, FMIC worth the extra 300?
Posted by EclipseGS1997, Feb-15-01 03:25 PM
in the near future i will be building my engine, and going with a turbo kit. i want to get Hahns stage 2 kit, and i will be getting it with the stage 1 wastegate setting because i am going to put a boost controller on it and boost 5psi when driving to/from school and work, and bump it up to 10 or 12psi when raceing. my question...is the FMIC upgrade for the hahn stage 2 kit necessary at 10 or 12psi? i know the FIMC would definitely look cooler, but that doesnt metter to me. if the SMIC does just as good, ill just keep it. thanks for any help.

For that boost the SMIC is more then enough. I know guys running the 4g63's at over 18psi with the STOCK SMIC and HRC's SMIC is way better. I think they say it's good for somewhere in the area of 300hp. If you don't care about the looks and only what to run 12psi save the $300. My $0.02, for $300 get that FMIC or your going to kick yourself later.

For a small 5-7 PSI the SMIC is more than enough, BUT think about this. You will be building you block as well as ONLY 7PSI and a FMIC. Boost is addictive, and someday you will need the extra cooling capacity of the Apex-i FMIC So I think you should stop kidding yourself thinking you will only stay at 7 PSI. I tell you that with everything you're having done you will be fine running 10 with the built block and FMIC ALL DAY LONG running HARD. There are only probelms with running 10-12 PSI on totaly stock block, with boost spikes. You will be safe, so punch 10, and when you're ready you will be able to upgrade to more power and have the right intercoler for the job. Now Joe is an exception because of his thicker HG which lets him run somewhere around 13PSI on the stock block.
