17484, Running lean...what to do?
Posted by ExcessTalonESi, Mar-12-02 10:54 AM
Well, my car was running really lean and so the shop pulled my plugs and re-gapped them and turned the fuel pressure up to 54 psi. Now I'm running about (according to my A/F guage) lean to normal, but still mostly lean. What the hell is causing this? Could it be my injectors? Should I go buy some injector cleaner? Also, I'm gonna buy new plugs here too. I'm running a HRC Stage 2 on a stock engine at 5 psi of boost.

well correct me if i'm wrong guys but your spark plug gap should be .30-.35 and your fuel pressure should be about 45 psi at idle and about 80-90 under full boost. (that being 7-9lbs)...so at 5lbs of boost u should be around 70-75psi.

im no expert but shouldnt you be running more like 9 lbs of boost on a stage 2?

I should be running 7 pounds on a Stage 2, but there's 3 small problems that prevent me from doing so right now.

1) I'm running lean.
2) No boost controller.
3) The wastegate is set for 7 psi at sea level and seeing as how I'm about 6,000 ft. above sea level, the pressure here will only allow the wastegate to produce 5 psi until I get a boost controller and am able to turn it up. :)

Leave your idle fuel pressure around 50. Adjust your boosted fuel pressure up to around 75-80PSI .. Even at 5PSI, when ou are 6,000 feet up, i can't see thier being enough AIR to be a problem ;-)

on my car idle is at 55psi if i go lower my cel comes on, and at 6psi fuel pressure is hmm 80-85psi and 9psi around 105psi about... so on your a/f gauge it reads lean only? do you got a blinky light only? does the car feel different then when the gauge before was rich if so? check to make sure your a/f gauge is wired right, and maybe your o2 sensor is bad? check it out...

My car DOES seem different now than it does when running a little rich. We checked the O2 sensor and it was ok. Um....what's really weird was that when I fist put my turbo on 3 months ago I could stay in neutral and rev and the car would boost. Now when I rev, the car goes to about 5 pounds of vacuum and won't boost anymore unless I'm in gear, then it boosts just fine. My A/F guage is a bar thingy that lights up and the bars light up to whatever I'm running at, lean...rich...in between....etc. The guage came from Summit. I'm going to try buying some fuel injector cleaner and installing new plugs later this week. Other than that, I'm not sure what to do...

have you check to your fuel system to make sure its all tight etc? did you install it yourself? how many miles u got on our car?

I've checked all the hoses and shit. Also, my car is a '96 and has 79,700 miles on it. Umm..I have figured out that I am running ok at lower RPM's and speeds, but at higher speeds I am running lean. I have NO clue how much psi of fuel pressure I am running while under boost. For example....at 40 MPH at 3 grand I'm running where I should be, but at 70 MPH and 3 grand I'm running lean. I only have a guage that's hooked up to read idling fuel pressure which is currently set at 54 psi. How do I change the fuel pressure for higher RPM's and boost?

you have the hrc stage 2 kit with the stock fuel system it comes with right? you have a fuel pressure gauge from your fpr to outside of your window to monitor it while driving?... you have a fuel pressure gauge for only idle? if its the small little black one that comes with the kit run a long fuel hose from the fpr to that gauge so its on the outside front glass while driving and monitor it while in boost.
at idle 50-55psi
0 psi -60psi
6psi- 85-90psi about
9psi-105-110psi on the fuel pressure gauge.
go check what fuel pressure you are at around 6psi 1st and let us know
cool

Yes I do.

No...the fuel pressure guage is located under the hood attached to the FPR and it only reads up to 60 psi.

I don't quite understand that...you mean attach the guage to the OUTSIDE of my car in front of the windshield (please forgive my ignorance...I know jack shit about cars..but I'm learning with every little thing that goes wrong)?

yea actually it is supposed to go outside your car. but i dont have it out there. i was actually wondering if for adjusting fuel pressure under boost, is it the same screw that we tighten for idle pressure? like when adjusting pressure for idle, do i jest adjust it so its about 50 psi idle and 80-90 psi under boost(8psi boost) at the same time? or are there different screws?

which fpr do you have on your car? if its the stock hrc fpr buy a gauge which reads over up to 110psi of fuel pressure or order it from hrc if you want. when you get a new fp gauge get a longer fuel pressure line long enough so the wiper can hold it down while you drive to mointer it to make sure its at the correct fuel pressure. i wish my scanner was working so i can show you sorry...
to the second post... if you have the stock hrc fpr that came with the kit the middle screw in the middle is ONLY to adjust idle fuel pressure. there is a screw to the side of it bronze or so that is what you adjust your boosted fuel pressure. mount your fp outside also to monitor yours to make sure you are within spec and after that you can keep it under the hood again...
hope this helps a bit

Thanks...I will try that. My FPR is the one that came with the HRC Stage 2 kit. The FPR is silver with a screw at the top for idle fuel pressure and there is that gold one next to it, but I never knew what it did...which way do you turn it? For example, does turning the bronze one clockwise make the pressure go up or down? Thanks so much for all your guys' help thus far!

Ok... Heres what to do. You have a gauge that reads only up to 60 psi, so use that to set your base fuel pressure to 50 psi. The base fuel pressure is adjusted by the big allen style screw on the top center of the regulator (I assume you have done this already). Next, since you know you are running lean you have to adjust that little brass knob next to it to adjust the fuel pressure at wide open throttle. As you turn the little brass nob clockwise, the fuel pressure will increase. Turn the nob all the way clockwise untill it is fully closed. Then back it off about 2 turns. Take a ride in your car and see what your air/fuel gauge says with the pedal to the medal (note: your air/fuel gauge will only read accurately when you have the car FLOORED. It will not read properly when cruising or at idle). If your gauge still doesnt get to the green LED's, turn the nob clockwise some more. If your gauge is reading past or at the very end of the green LED's, turn the brass knob counterclockwise 1/2 turn at a time until you are in the middle of the green section.

Another side note: If your air/fuel gauge is hooked up properly, when you are at idle or cruising, the LED's should fluxuate back and fourth fairly rapidly. If they do not, then your gauge is not hooked up right or your o2 sensor is bad.

you could do that method of adjusting the fuel pressure but i would not. i rather be safe then sorry and also its a good thing to have a fuel pressure gauge that reads over 100psi... the method you mention is cool but i rather know then guess if its around that area... but since you only can boost 5psi it should be around 75-80psi of fuel pressure about...
