17301, Warped Exahust Manifold

I wish i would have taken a picture of my exhaust manifold before I gave it to my uncle. It was warped like a damn S where it bolts up to the head. Crazy shit. What do you think could have caused this? Running too hot? or Poor Quality? It has always blown gaskets and I never cared enough to actually have my uncles take a look at it, but now that I did, they said it was all fugged up and they would try and fix it... They can do all the laser cutting shit and milling and crap, so is it ok for me to let them do it, or will it maby make it too thin and then warp more in the future? Or do you think HRC would unstand the troubles i've had for over a year and swam em out? I doubt it cause, but didnt know whether to ask or not... And It has cracked like 3 times now...

I had 60 k taken off mine and then had it stress relieved. Basically they heat it to red hot and then cool it slowly. I still have a lot of thickness on the manifold side. I thought you had a tubular manifold the last time i saw that thing? Are you talking about the cast or tubular? late mike

Mine cracked at the weld right where the tubes come into the single piece. I had it fixed. I dont think mine is warping any. I really hope it doesnt.

Its HRC's 20G manifold, might be the same as the 16g manifold, not sure... but i have had nothing but leaks from it either from gaskets blowing because of being warped or cracks from the welds coming loose... I paid to have it ceramic coated, and with the welds to fix the cracks and shit, the ceramic coating is about off... sucks... Just did'nt know if I had it milled if it would have attendancy to warp even more in the future do to the thinning... any input HRC?

as long as you have enough meat on the manifold plate you shoud be able to mill it down. Most likely the welds arent cracking. Your ceramic coat was good for what temp? The only thing I've heard that works is like the real jet hot. Late mike

no, my welds have cracked 3 different times, 2 welds one time... When you can visually see and feel exhaust coming through a crack in the weld, i would say that its a significant crack... And I meant that every time they had to scar up the areas where the crack occured and weld them, they removed the ceramic coating, so i am missing patches of ceramic coating, and yes the ceramic coating in the other places looks like the day it was put on... Guess
I will hopefully get it fixed this time and have it ceramic coated a second time and hope it will hold from now on.

replace yoru manifold and get one of the new model HRC manifolds. the 16 uses the same manifold as the 20. the newer manifolds don't have any problems from crackign or warping (mine is a newer style, and I have had 0 problems.) you will also want ot stud your manifold insted of using bolts....and if you are still using those cheezy hex key bolts that came with it....you might as well forget those. they aren't worth a crap. I used regular hardware store studs for mine, and not a single one has backed out yet. I would reccomend somethign stronger 'though (like an arp stud or something)

bring it on............

Brad!

I think there must be a problem with the email feature on this site, as I have tried to contact you twice about this in the last month or so and had no response. I suspect you may have our older thinwall manifold, which I will replace at no charge. Let me help you out: email me your phone number to eng@turbosystem.com.

Dave,

Which type manifold do you have? We have had zero issues with our current design, so I am keenly interested. Respond here or email me.

Thanks!

when did the new manifold come into effect? i bought my kit back in sept '01 is mine the new kind?
also i want to get some better bolts or something instead of those hex bolts that come with the kit, and where could i get those and how good are they? i would like something to torque down with a wrench instead of trying with a kex key! also what is the part # and how much do these bolts cost?
thanks

Bill, I have Rays old kit. I know you remember Ray. I bought it from him last June. It must be a few years old but I am not sure. I probably have the old style manifold too. So you are saying I can get it replaced for free? Thats would be great! The repaired spot does look a little ugly but it still works. and I also have the hex style bolts that hold the manifold on.

It must be one of the older ones. The kit was purchased shit, its been awhile... lets see, right before November of 2000 i believe is correct. I have had great sucess with everything else, just this manifold has cracked several times on me now.. and its warped. I will contact you by email also Dave, thanks a lot for the help, maby I can eliminate one more headache now :-) wanna come throw in my Quaife and bolt the tranny back in for me? that'd relieve another headache, hehe. BTW, just my oppinion but i think you all should really tell people and list it on your site that the higher stage kits really should be accompanied by a upgraded diff as well...

Heh well your running like 18 psi maybe that's why it keeps cracking, probably wasn't made for that. What kinda exhuast you got also. I agree the Star Manifold is a bad design but it is durable.

Bleh gotta get rid of the exhuast gasket leak though. if I got a small leak can I just plug it up with some kinda superheat gasket sealer or will it just blow out again? hehe....
