1724, How many of you are successful with ur turbo kits? Posted by Kory, Feb-13-01 07:25 AM
When I mean successful, I mean no blown engines and either non built up motor or built up. If you can give me a quick list of personal experience "things to watch out for", i really appreciate it!
Thanks,

1726, all good for me... Posted by JasonESi_T, Feb-13-01 03:12 PM
Well,
I haven't done a single thing to my engine yet. After over 7k turbocharged miles, all is good and I have no signs of oil leakage, blowby or anything else. This has been with a LOT of turbo'ed miles too. Meaning, I'm not "soft" on the car. I don't abuse it in cold weather or anything, but when it's warm < I love to gun it and boost!
Things I do to keep the car safe:
I swear, I'm always looking at my vacuum lines, and have changed some of them already once, I don't want any problems b/c of some braised vacuum lines. (If I suspect any vaccum leaks, I spend the 49 cents a foot to replace some of them) Also, I change my oil every 2-3 thousand miles with mobil sythetic 5w30. I don't care IF the stuff is supposed to last longer, I want clean oil. I've also heard that a turbo can gunk up your oil a LOT faster. When I change my oil, I give everything a closer inspection. That means, I review my fuel lines closely and make sure there aren't any problems. One time, I noticed that a return fuel line off my fuel rail to my FPR was coming a bit braised on the side possibly from some engine vibration contact. I immediately changed it of course. Another thing, I constantly do, is monitor my idle fuel pressure and also recheck my boosted fuel pressure to ensure I'm where I want to be. Lastly, I went with colder plugs and 8.5mm wires.
There are just some of things I do to make sure everything's tip top. I open my hood about every weekend at least and give everything a good look-over and make maintenance replacements when necessary. Now with an EGT guage to help monitor things, it's that much easier to keep tabs on how my car feels. Just stay on top of your car like always and know what to look at!

My bottom end is still stock and no probs yet. I did have a stock clutch in it too, until recently when it exploded. I agree with Jason in that if you just keep an eye on your car all should be fine. Also if you abuse your car, things are gonna break, turbo or not. So you should expect that if your gonna run your car excessively hard, something is gonna give eventually. Good luck. Both of you went with HRC, what was the determining factor? What specs did both of you guys get? (timers, BOVs, etc) thanks!

The determing factor for me was the research that HRC put into their product. They really seemed to be on the ball. Also, Star could have at least put up a website to make things look good. Trying to find info about that kit is like finding a needle in a haystack, at least it was for me. Another factor was I knew someone with the HRC kit (Murix) and it looked like a pretty good product. Looked a little shoe-horned into the bay but I guess that's because it's not supposed to be there. All in all, word of mouth and the apparent research made up my mind. As far as add-on's go I have a HKS TT, a Blitz SSBC, Autometer A/F gauge, and a GReddy type-S BOV. I'm thinking of adding a EGT and fuel press. gauge this spring. Good luck with your set-up. I completely agree with Joe (Blkout) on why he bought the HRC system. When I was first considering the kit, only a few on the board were turbo'ed. People like Thunder, Joe, and Chris were particularly noteable and influential to me. Really, only Wyatt had the STAR kit and his baby had just blown up. Furthermore, I had called a number of companies that would sell the kit to me, but they didn't seem particularly legitimate or customer-support friendly. Well, that pretty much did it for me, so that's why I went HRC. Especially in light of I knew where is place of business was. :-)
Anyhow, I don't have a lot of the fancy BOV's or anything like that, but I do have things like the fuel pressure guage, EGT guage, and an intellitronix A/F meter. Besides that, I have other performance stuff, but the guages have to be the most important thing!
