i got my bottom end kit, but the 10.5:1 pistons aren't marked or anything, i do notice that they arenot symmetrical, how do i know which way faces the intake ports and which face the exhaust?

if they are JE pistons, they are non-directional, per HRC when i asked about mine.

they are directional, the piston is definitely not symmetrical

Call Howell and ask... My JE's had no wristpin offset on the micrometer, and i was told they were non-directional.

i called howell and they said the cutouts for the intake are bigger, but i measured them on our optical comparator and those damn things are the same size, what i did notice is that one side of the piston is lower than the other. i'm right next to JE pistons, you think they know which side it would be?

If they are JE pistons, i can guarantee you they'll know.

Again, if they are JE pistons, i swear up and down on your shortblock, they are non-directional. there is NO offset on the wrist pin.

there may not be any offset in the wristpin, but the top of the piston is not symmetrical, it is milled a little different from one side to the other, so i don't know which cutouts face the intake and which face the exhaust.
i'm gonna take a picture and sent it to howell and se if they can tell me.

Those cutouts have no bearing at all on which way the piston has to face. The valves do not sit there.

If it's any help, the intake valves are bigger than the exhaust.

My pistons go in any way I want they have no off set.
They guy @ CNNP Racing said the exhaust valve's don't hit cuz they are smaller.
mine are only 8.5:1 though.

I thought the exhaust valves were larger than intake??!!!

I just took a stock cyl head to be cleaned at my local machine shop, and while there, was talking to them about using oversized valves, and we could only have oversized valves on the intake valves, not exhaust...

I can confirm this when i get home and take a look at another spare cyl head i have laying around...

well if you notice the bridge between the valve cups is a little different and the milled out section on the outside between the valve cups is a little deeper on one side, but i still have no idea which way these damn things go in.

I swear up a down, man, it makes no difference AT ALL which direction you install those pistons. There is NO WRISTPIN OFFSET.

Here's what i was told, straight from HRC Tech Support when i ordered my pistons:

1. Are these pistons directional? We can find no markings or direction designating marks on any surface. It is unusual to find it this way. All pistons we (he) has ever worked with have an arrow, letter, or other designation showing which side of the piston should be towards the front of the motor. He checked the offset on the wrist pin, expecting to find that it was offset to one side (as he is used to) but instead, to his surprise, found it centered. Does it matter which way these pistons go into the cylinder bores?


No, the pistons are non-directional. We install them so that the "JE" mark on the underside is in the same direction on all four.


2. Are the rods directional? We have the same questions as above on these. There seem to be no designation markings as to which side is which. Does it matter how these rods sit on the crank, or which direction they face?


Also non-directional. We install with the numbers facing the front of the engine.

hey i found out. I called JE and talked to one of their engineers who was very acommadating. He told me a secret. the JE logo underneath the piston that is forged into the piston is always on the exhaust side. He told me to remember, the the E in JE is exhaust. hehe finally, i'm suprised that howell did not know that. oh well hope this helps other people too
