1703, on that topic (sort of...) (Howell, HRC, anyone else with ecu know-how)

In the event that Howell doesn't do anything "special" for us turbo users in the ecu realm of things, UI wonder how much different that ecu is as opposed to the 420a ecu. Does it employ a MAP or a MAF. Why I'm goin down this route? As I understand it, the SRT Neon which of course is boosted used a remapped ecu from this mexican chrysler to brain the neon.

How similar is this computer in this car to our own and could it be "converted" or remapped to be used with our own cars???

I know.... this may be a total over-kill rather than going with a add-on fuel ecu "helper" for our cars, but something along this line is theoretically intriguing. Especially for wanting something with nice street manners and nasty track habits! :-)

That engine bay looks soooo similar to ours!

1704, RE: TURBO ECU

All Chrysler cars use MAP sensors turbo or not !
I've looked into this particular ecu before, but i never got very
far with it since the car is only available in Mexico, and I do not understand Spanish.. Well anyway I think that car was available up until 1994 (correct me if im wrong).. So Most likely the ECU is an OBDI ...One way to check this out would be to call up chrysler and find out the PART# for the wiring harness for the turbo 2.4... and also the PART# for the 420A NA, if they match up, the ECU should be able to operate our motors without any problems... As i've seen many HONDA swaps (ie. GSR motor in a civic ex... using the Civic EX ecu) not the best way to go but it will work !

Now if the Wiring harness is NOT the same.. we would have to get the diagrams for both engines and do some surgery!! (not pretty).

On the same note.. I've also heard rumors that there is a TURBOCHARGED 420A available.. i dont know how accurate this is. But when i called a local engine importer for a 420A long block the guy asked (turbo or non turbo).. to make a long story short.. he said "there is a turbo 420a chrysler motor" !! but they didnt have any in stock..

How come Canada/USA never saw any stock turbo 420a ? Pollution policies too stringent?

It may have been as simple as some shit-for-brains exec thinking the market for a stock turbocharged car just wasn't great enough to warrant the production of a full line of turbo'd 420A's. That, or it's a safety issue... With the placement of the turbo on the 420A (right there in front), in any hard front end collision, you could do serious damage to the turbo, manifold, head, motor mounts, frame, driver, etc... As well as the propensity for the turbo to become extremely hot, being in front, in said collision, would definately be a fire hazard...

Who knows?

I don't know about the turbo in the front being risk/fire hazard...what about the GSTs/GSXs?

Who knows...maybe car executives think that sports cars are a thing of the past and so no longer will be needed...

Anyone notice now how there is little/no sports cars?

in this 2.4 liter setup, the turbo is in the back of the motor anyway. The exhaust is on the back just like the N/A stratus and neon motors.

Lookin at the pic closely, it looks like this motor is set up just like ours, with the intake on the back (next to firewall) and the turbo up front (near radiator)... See the intake pipe running to the back? Looks like it to me... Correct me if I'm wrong...

the intake pipe runs to the back of the car, cus that is where the turbo is. The turbo is a solid unit, with the compressor inlet being part of the same assembly as the turbine and all the rest of the turbo.

you are thinking the inlet runs to the back of the motor like how our stock N/A cars run. But, slap a turbo on there, and look for where the intake runs on it. The intake plumbing goes directly to the turbo, which is on the front side of the motor.

If you go look at a neon, or stratus, you will see what i mean, they look way more similar. And if you notice, there is no heat sheilds around what would be the exhaust runners if it was the turbo in the front. That would cause chrysler alot of lawsuits if it was that way.

Its set up like the neon. The intake pipe going towards the firewall is likely from the air filter to the turbo in the back. Thats definately the intake side on the front.

Went and looked at a friends 2001 Neon R/T lastnight after posting... Now I see what you guys are referring to... How do they get a friggin' turbo mounted back there? Getting the manifold bolts torqued down correctly must be a beotch!!! Sorry for the confusion and thanks for clearing that up for me...

Its all about emissions. While any factory turbo'd car can be made to be compliant with the regs, it does take work and not all companies are willing to do this anymore. Some are though, witness the Subie WRX. Mexico's emissions laws are not as strict as those in the US, so they get the 2.4l turbo motor and we don't.

Hey you found it! I knew that Chrysler made the 2.2L turbo but the 2.4L is pretty impressive. As the site says it is the same head as the Neon only with hardened internals, now if I could somehow get the valve cover to fit the Talon/Eclipse, it would be perfect for the Stroker and turbo. Anybody know if that could be done? Anyone? HRC?

That engine block definitely looks exactly like the 420a block in our cars. It has the same bolt placement, that crosshatching...its all there. I would think it is the same block with a different head and internals.
Now the question is how would you go about finding out for sure?

Yes the block and bolt fittingts are the same, except it's the 2.4L which is about an inch taller, but the head is of the Neon line

1717, Just think guys....

There's probably a club/ group of guys down there in Mexico (maybe with a message board heh) stompin all over people in their turbo'ed 420a's. That'd be pretty ironic to think about in my book.

And just the other day mr. service/parts counter at mitsu was telling me how much "stronger" the 4g63 was since it was "meant" for the turbocharging....( I mean, I know the rods/pistons are, but get off the high horse..)

Anyways, this turbocharged 420a just confirms the fact of how well our cars respond to boost. It was meant to...(at least, to some degree)
