16968, Semi-Urgent HRC Stage II Owners Question (Idle Probs)
Posted by pocotheeskimo, Mar-06-02 03:49 AM
Hello,
I just took my car into the dealership to get it checked out under the assumption that probably the 02 sensor went bad.. But I just spoke with them and the car's running fine, but the kit's having problems.. They told me another kid with the same kit (i had no clue there was another 2gnt with HRC in town), was having the same problem (running rich, idle problems and such things).. And they told me to get in contact with Hahn because there was some type of module they were sending out.. Anyone have any idea about this? Are they talking about an AFC or somethign? I can't call HRC until 1Pm CST, so I figured I'd post here and see if anyone else has had this problem. Any help is greatly appreciated..

Gary

Yesterday on the way to the dealership I stalled out a couple times.. My FPR is at around 45 or so at idle, new plugs, lube.. besides that it's how I got it from Jeff_99gs.. It didn't start acting funny until about 3 days ago..

Have you checked your fuel pressure at idle lately? It may be higher than you think. I have heard that the older cast Cartech regulators have some idle pressure issues every now and again. If you are newer than 95, you also have a "fuel mapper" - basically a voltage clamp on the MAP sensor voltage. If a wire has come loose there, your car will run three shades of bad, and will cut fuel above 4000RPM or so.

What are some other symptoms?

It's basically just kinda like, when you first learn to drive stick, and you don't give it enough gas, it kinda shakes until you do, sometimes it feels like that, it backfires once in a while too if i rev it a bit.. the throttle is very unresponsive, it's just like if i floor it, i still go pretty freaking slow.. it's just been driving really poo-like the last few days.. Where's the MAP sensor? I'll have to check that..

What year is your car? Are you using an HRC Fuel mapper at all? If you're not a 95, you need one.

The MAP sensor is located on the passenger side of the intake manifold, facing up. it's the only sensor there.

Try giving HRC a call as well. Even though you are not the original owner, they will still give you support. Bill's a good guy.

Hello,
Yep, I'm a 99.. and so I'm using the fuel mapper.. what exactly is it's job? Is it kinda like an AFC in a really basic way? The dealership told me I'm running really rich and to get in contact with Hahn.. That's about all they could do.. they said it wasn't the o2 sensor.. I guess I'll give hahn a call in a bit.. my FPR is at about 45 at idle.. it was weird, when i picked up the car from the dealership, the A/F was reading 1.1xx.. then once i drove for a bit, it resumed it's running really low (.3, .4..) and was choppy once in a while.. it's been acting funny today..

Hmm....
Now I have straight -.000/.000 reading on the A/F.. I checked the fuel pressure, and it was up to 60 at idle.. so I set it back to 45.. should it be rising on it's owN? What's up with that? Also, I checked the MAP sensor and everything's wired in fine.. But maybe I unwired in everything fine and that's why it's at .000???? Help! =) Hahn told me to take it to a shop and have them work on it while talking to hahn over the phone.. just what i need, more downtime =), but if it'll get it to run like it used to it's worth it.. the only question to me now is how much $$$ is it gonna be???

Make sure your inline fuel pump is running and that there are no kinks to the fuel line.

do you got a super afc hooked up? if so go to check sensor screen and one of those lines while in boost should be inbetween 1.0v-4.7v... if you dont got a afc tap your map sensor wires where the hrc fcd hooks up to a multimeter inside the car and see what voltage you get while boosting... also the hrc fpr on mostly all hrc owners car does go up and down... check to make sure your fuel pump is working ( making noise ) at 45psi is should be pretty loud i mostly have mine at 55 since if i go lower most of the time at idle my cel comes on and it says on my labtop system to lean.... make sure your fuel system is all good, check the relay under your rear seat to make sure its ok, and your fuse for your relay/pump... have you changed/checked your plugs recently? pull them out and check it out... let us know whatelse is going on im not really so sure what to say...

Hello,
I do have an AFC, but it's not hooked up yet.. I don't know how =) I just got it on monday and haven't had the time (or a car, it's been in the shop) to install it on.. I'm not too sure how to set it up either.. I've seen the one guy's page on how to install it and things, but mine's got about 3-4 more wires than on the diagram.. If anyone would be interested in walking me through putting it on and tuning it that would be cool.. And my fuel pump is pretty noisy, so i'm pretty sure it's working.. it's weird though, I've noticed sometimes, the needle on the gauge under the hood stays at 20 when the engine's off for a bit.. I just changed my plugs yesterday, i looked at one today and it's prety black.. I wiped off my muffler and it's pretty black again, but that's just being rich for you.. not too sure what else to do but take it in..

what page did you look up for the super afc? check this out and do ONLY what it says dont tune anything till your car is working right...http://www.turbogs.com/tech/afc_install/afc_install_420a.htm
this was done by Wyatt a long time ago this how i hooked up my afc also.... as far as the plugs being black and exhaust you are running rich i hope... you might want to check your wires for your air/fuel to make sure its hooked up correct and has a good ground... well when you turn off your car my neddle goes down very slow but does not stay at 20!

You had said that the base fuel pressure rised by itself, is the nut that holds it tightened? If it is secure, and it continues to change, then you might have a defective unit. Like the others mentioned, you should check that the fuel lines aren't pinched or kinked. I know that could affect performance.

set idle at 55psi drive around it drops to like 45-50psi sometimes and my NUTS tight =)
also check for kinks in the fuel line under the car as said before...

I will double check my nuts tonight.. but i'm kinda afraid to drive it as it's not reading anything as far as a/f.. so if it's lean (as in no fuel), i don't really want to drive much.. it's weird, everything just kinda came on all of the sudden.

Yep, I saw the page.. the only thing is, with my harness thingy, i have all the ones listed, i also have however, a blue, a pink w/female fitting, and an orange with male fitting.. are these just not listed/used, or do i have some crazy harness thing??my a/f is hooked up correct, i checked the ground a day ago.. it's been doing fine, as far as reading, so i'm pretty sure it's not that.. and yep, my needle does go down very slow.. very very slow.. but it stays at 20, 10, etc for a while until finally 0.. yeah, i hope i'm running rich too..

does anyone have a close up pic of how their AFC is wired in? I'd love to see it as to get a better idea of how it's done/to do it. Thanks

Hmm..
Now when I start it it makes kinda like fluidy-slushy noises, like when a big plastic jug has a bit of water in it and you slush it around a bit.. and another thing, my fuel pump doesn't seem as loud as normal.. I think that might be part of this whole thing too?? Sigh.. well it's going to the doctor's on Saturday to get checked out, hope all goes well.
