16712, how much boost on can i run on 10.5:1 pistons
Posted by jamesman, Mar-03-02 02:53 AM
i was wondering how much boost i could run on 92 and 100 octane gas with 10.5 compression. i am going to order my howell kit and was thinking of getting 10.5 compression and then get a crane ignition with boost timing retard. could i safely run 15 psi?
thanks
james

I think 15lbs can be done but your going to have to have one perfectly tuned car. I would also think you would have to run 110 octane.

Higher compresion on a turboed car is a tricky thing. If you do not want to worry about your engine just get 8:8:1 compression. You can run pretty much as high boost as you want on that compression as long as you have the fuel and the timing retard.

You can run a stage 2 with no other changes.

hey james, hows the car bro? sorry to hear dude i guess your brake money is going to the engine =( or =) ... but you should be able to run 15psi with your car tune correct as long as you got your fuel in order and you retard timing enough... also the highter octane 100+ you should be able to turn up the boost about 2psi then normal... i mostly put 100 about each month or so... i just got some yesterday for $4.25/gal...and its unleaded so you wont mess up your o2.... i am most likely going to get the crane Hi-6DI2 and the retard it with the boost proportion sensor, but it cost a grip of money dame.... and its a bit smaller then the msd dis2 which is good for me since i got no dame room in my bay so i might be able to fit it next to my ecu... i guess i will do this since you wont be free for a long time now for the fuel since you got a long way ahead of you...
let me know the best price you get dude for the ignition later...
cool

Stan,
so you are saying i can run a straight stage II without any other modifications. say 10 psi i have an hrc stage II FMIC 30# injectors sfmu, afc, and i'm going to get that new crane ignition. will i have any problems?
thanks
james

You could still have problems. My car cracked 2 pistons at 10.5 psi and thats w/ AFC and 370 injectors. I suggest not turning up boost until u rebuild.

I run a stage 2 intercooled at 10.5:1 compression and i'm pushing 10psi and no problems. Last time i opened up my cylinders, they were looking just fine. And i run 93/94 octane gas daily.

I dont forsee any problems upwards of 15psi, but higher than that, a little ignition control wouldnt hurt (like any other setup you wouldnt run ignition control as well, ya know?)

Folks, the reason why a lot of DSM's run 8.something compresssion out of the factory was because of knuckle-head drivers putting in 87 octane gas.

Just run good octane fuel and take care of your engine, and you wont have a problem.

And boost w/ 10.5:1 compression just rocks ;)

What turbo are we talking here?

You can run as much boost as looks good vs timing vs fuel with your setup when you actually tune your car on a dyno so it runs right instead of making guesses on the internet since no one has run more than 10psi on any turbo on a 420A I am aware of with high compression to honestly properly fully answer the question.

okay here it is, this is the setup. Howell kit with 10.5 compression pistons, HRC stage II, 16g turbo, HRC FMIC, 30# injectors, S-FMU, -6an steel braided Fuel lines, SAFC, crane or msd ignition, polished and gasket matched head, swirl polished stainless valves.
What i want to know is if i can do 10 psi daily, and maybe 12-15 psi here and there on 91/92 octane pump gas. cause 92 is non existant here in California.
thanks

That is about the same as i'm going to be running in a few weeks.
I've ordered the 10.5:1 setup from howell. I hope to run 15 psi daily, but well see after its tuned. I'm not sure 30# injectors will produce enought fuel for 15 with 10.5. I'm running 625:-) and i'm still worried.
