16694, Compression Test results :( Posted by 96venger, Mar-01-02 05:05 PM
My car has had a lot of Blow by dumping out of the breather nipple. I tok it to the shop and they charged my 100 bucks to tell me the oil I see is tranny fluid and they said they fixed it, couple of days later I see more oil, I take it back and they charge me another 100 bucks to run a hose from the breather nipple to an empty Gatorade bottle, So today I still see oil, with a little green mixed in there, I do a compression test and I got 120, 135, 135, 135. I am assuming I have a blown HG. So I take it to a diff shop and they will look at it do compression and leak down test, and let me know tuesday. When he start to tear into is there anything else I should have him do?? This shop can do anything you can think of.... Would the timming belt be a good thing to do while he has it opened, I have 81K and never changed it. What else..........Maybe P&P the head or something...... i was wanting to go ahead and get the howell bottom end but no $$$$$
If you can think of anything else that may be wrong with the car let me know Thanks

You should do the timing belt service for sure and P&P if you can.

I've said this before, from personal experience with close friends and people on this board. I advise against porting the head. Polishing, yes. Porting, no. Youre gonna lose power, get a weird power band and get a nasty idle. And since you said you dont have the $$$$, you definitely dont wanna have to do some serious, tedious tuning that would be necessary to get your car to run right after porting it.

ead porting is a GOOD THING if done in moderation. Both people that i know that gain shitty idle problems and loss of air velocity (Shaun and Marcus) from thier porting both personally described it as "a wild port job." Both later came back and stated (Marcus on the board, Shaun to me) that they really didn't feel any gains from all that money they spent.
There is a such thing as overkill. Done right, it will yield gains.

All you really have to do is clean up the ports and take a little off the top and bottom of the ports to match the intake/exhaust manifolds, right Darkone?

I would never let someone do headwork that does not have a flow bench to prove to me their work is worth anything.
