where is the best place to install the egt probe??? what # should i be seeing w/star stage 1?

#4 runner (driver's side), about 2 inches from the head. The numbers you see depend on your tuning.

What if you mount it at the top of your downpipe right after the turbo? The exhaust would then have already been expelled from the turbo and be much hotter, what would the maximum safe temp be then?

Take off 200 degrees off the egt in the manifold. So dont go over 1400.

Wouldn't it be hotter if it was mounted after the turbo? I have been told if you mount it in the downpipe instead of the runner that the EGT would be higher? I hit 1400 degrees in like 8-10 seconds of WOT.

Whoever told you that doesn't know jack sh*t about turbos. 1400 is the maximum temp you would want to see mounted in the downpipe. Personally, I would richen things up a bit if I were seeing numbers that high, but technically that should be ok. Mine is mounted in the manifold and I get a high of 1550 F

The gas would be cooler in the turbo due to the heat loss through the manifold anf turbine housing.. not hotter. 200* is a rough estimate.. the best place when using one probe is the #4 runner (for the 420A) about 2" away from the head.

Isn't exhaust gas hotter, the closer it is to the combustion/fire? I would think it would only get cooler as it leaves the block. Even the turbo isn't as hot as fire is.

Darkone, why on the #4 runner instead of the others? Because That cylinder is most prone to run rich because of the placement of runner on intake side?

Could the 4G63 motor handle hotter EGT's than the 420A? I often times have my GSX to 1500degrees under WOT on the freeway, normal temperature on the freeway reads about 1200 at about 70mph. Is it accurate to assume the stock turbo'd engine would be built to withstand higher temperatures?
