16388, Oil Leak BAD!!!
Posted by 96venger, Feb-25-02 11:12 PM
Well On my way home last night I smelled oil, so I checked it out when I got home.
Right where the intake pipe bends at the Batt. to go to the TB there was oil all over the pipe.
I am gonna say that is from the breather and oil shooting out of it.
So I checked the oil and it was pretty low, I added oil drove it a little and checked it again and there was oil on the intake pipe again.
The oil was low again.
I looked under the car and it was all wet.
I added oil and drove it home, before I went to bed I put a pizza box under the car, got up this morning and it had oil all in the box.

i had taken it to the shop last week for what I THOUGHT was a small oil leak. The shop said it was tranny fluid and it was an axle seal where the axle goes to the tranny, but I thought it looked like oil myself.
So they fix the "axles leak"
But now the oil is back and worse.
What could it be?????????

I plan to take it back to the shop but I am affraid they will say, well we fixed the tranny leak now you have an oil leak when I think it was oil the whole time.............

if the oil is all over the outside of the pipe it is most likely coming out of your breather. but it should not be as much as you say it is. our engines are known for spitting oil when under pressure. are you turboed?

Could be a LOT of blow-by which wouldn't be good if it's as much as your describing. (that would mean your rings might be through) Also, from beneath that area is the T'ed Oil Sensor in the back of the block. The headgasket problematic area is also in that area of the engine bay. Those are just some things that are close to the area in question.

Yes I am turboed.
But if it were the rings would there be black smoke coming from the exhaust??

I will have to check on the HG and the oil sensor.
About a month ago I took my car to get an oil change cause I was being lazy and they told me I had a small rear main seal leak.
Could that have gotten worse since I am running more boost now??
I need to get under it and look but i need a lift.
Yeah the blow by is bad.
I wiped it off and drove for about 10 mins pushing 7-9 psi and checked and the oil was on th pipe and some on the TB again.

Might not be rings. everyone here assumes it is but Im 90% sure my car needs a valve job and Im having same problems as u. yesterday dsmnt96 called me and now he is having same problem. Dont jump to conclusion about it being rings cause if u spend all the time and $ rebuilding and yuor problem aint fixed u will regret it. Do compression test. Then wet test and if compression jumps up then falls back down then its your rings. If not u most likely need a valve job like me I hope. Good luck.

It's never the rings. NEVER. Say it with me now. N-E-V-E-R. Good.

I hate it when i hear that. "It's your rings, dude!"

If it's spewing oil out all of a sudden, you've likely cracked a piston. Do a compression test.

I hope it is nothing that bad.
What is a valve job and how would that make it leak oil all over the place??
I know it is coming out of the breahter but I also know it isn't so much that it is puddling up in the drive way after the car is turned off.

it's probably oil that is leaking down from the breather. I was leaving nice sized puddles under my car that way.

Do a compression test first bro you most likely cracked a piston how would I know I blew my engine about 7 times overboosting on purpose. I never cracked the rings most of the time you probably cracked 1 piston. Get a catch can from RRE if your compression is good above 175.()

well we all have oil blow by bad. Especially under alot of boost. I purchased the jaz can with 2 inlets and a big breather. I got it from a speed shop here in town. It was 30$. I ran hoses from both the pcv port and the breather port to it. No oily mess any more. and a less burnt oil smell. Try it, late mike

where can I get this jaz can?

Do you have a picture of your setup? Did you leave the PCV valve attached or just remove it? What'd you do with the other end of the pcv line?

I can fill a catchcan with oil after probably 15-30 mins of sustained boosting at 7psi.

just "T" into the line. thats what i did. so when boost comes and the pcv closes the air/oil will vent thru the "T" to the catch can.

usually if oil is outside of your block, it can mean multitude of things, but surely isnt your piston or rings UNLESS you know for sure that oil is coming out of the breather nipple.

If it isnt, check the following:

1) Headgasket #4 cyl corner
2) rear of valve cover
3) Cam position sensor seal
4) T-fitting where the oil pressure sensor and turbo oil sending line are attached to (this one is usually the culprit).

Another tip is to get under the car, look at the back of the block with a spot light, and see if the oil on the rear of the block is above or under the headgasket line. If its under, then i can be items #1 or #4. If its above, then it should be items #2, 3.

good luck.

My "T" was squirting oil every where a few weeks ago. After all the fiitings were taken apart and re sealed with teflon tape and retightened everything was ok. No more oil leak.

It could also be a real bad valve cover gasket. Based on what you are describing, it would be on the #4 cylinder side (right next to your pipe bend by the tb). Also, (I think Jason said this first) it could very well be your oil pressure sending unit. There's a lot of pressure on that thing, and if it starts coming loose, it will squirt oil a long ways. Those of you who started your car with the ss oil line running to the turbo loosened up know exactly what I'm talking about. I sprayed that shiat all over my garage (walls included x( ).

I know.. that gets on my nerves too dino.. it's not the rings.. everyone please get that through your head. If you have that much oil blowing out of the breather tube.. it's blowby.. due to cracked pistons.. believe me.. I'm on my fourth engine right now.. I'm sure tommyboy would tell you the same. stock pistons don't hold up for too long.. you can probably boost up in the double digits with them.. but it's only a matter of time before they crack where the grooves are for the rings. Your rings are almost indestructible. at least at the boost levels all your cars have seen so far.
