16122, howell bottom end kit?
Posted by Ecliptic, Feb-21-02 03:36 AM
I have my star stage 2 on the way and I want to upgrade my internals now. I want to order the howell kit but I have some quick questions? As far as the pistons, which is better for turbo, standard size or .020 overbore? Also compression, which is better for turbo, 8.6, 10.5, or 12.5. Last question, as far as rods and main bearings, which is better for turbo, standard or .010 undersize. Thanks!!

Anything overbored is always good, increased overall volume for air/fuel.

Also

lower compression is better for turbo in terms of reliability. (i think gst 4g63 pistons are 8.5:1). but there are some people who have run high compression pistons with boost and are damn proud of it.
afx did a post on compression... it's on the main page somewhere now.. afx compression etc etc rant.. search for it. =)

Um.. i dunno. =P 2 out of 3 ain't bad though. heh.

I just bought the kit and here is what I did

.020 pistons- this basically is just to be sure the cylinders are round

over sized bearings- if you get your crank ground, you will need oversized bearings

I went 8.6 to 1 pistons. I have heard guys on here talk about using high compr. pistons. Lower compression allows you to run more boost, but you will see more power with the same boost when you have higher compression, but you have a higher chance of detonation(did that make sense??)

This is my understanding of things. Guys, if anything I stated if wrong, please let me know.
