1608, Star Turbo kit upgrade Time... =)

hey wassup people well im gettin ready to finish put some new parts on the car, and replace the old stuff, with some new Stuff,
im planning to replace the Turbonetics deltagate with a Tial one, but i was wondering what size i should go with they have 35mm, 40mm and 46mm whats better about going with a bigger wastegate im running about 15psi or do i even need to go bigger on the wastegate side and the 35mm is plenty wastegate for me, second im going to put in my EGT gauge but... i was going to mount the probe in the downpipe is that a smart idea i was told if its mounted there that it might be not as accurate..i was going to mount it into the Exh manifold but..the runners are too short and it seems that drilling might get chunks into engine other wise should i take the time and take the manifold to mount it in there or is it not necessary also i was thinking it gets mounted in the DownPipe that would make the DownPipe a bit weaker it might start cracking around the Probe, kay also i bought a JumpTroniX airfuel Ratio and i was wondering if you guys know the Color of the wire in for the o2sensor there are 2 white ones, black, and a grey which do i splice for reading the o2 Thanks

Sup? well you're gonna have to tapp that EGT into #4 cylinder
exhaust manifold runner to get an accurate reading cause it runs
the leanest cause it's on the end of the fuel rail and i hope your internals are beefed if you're gonna run 15 PSI as for the wastegate ????

You GOTTA go into runner number 4. No exceptions on an EGT placement otherwise you shouldn't waste your time installing 1 at all. I say do it right, and drill #4 like Kaiser said

And make sure you drill the manifold while the car is running to blow the chips out while you're drilling.

or take of the manifold and drill it then... =)

Hey Eric, did you upgrade your internals? What else did you do so you can run 15 psi?

Hmmm HRC or actually my installer said HRC doesn not recommend drilling into teh manifold, is this for the star manifold only??I have my probe in the down pipe.......

Why on earth would you do that!

What kind of accurate measurement of you EGTs do you think you're receiving when tapping your downpipe? You aren't! The reason for tapping the hottest runner is to get the worst reading from your engine to prevent lean burn. If you want better readings then the only thing to do is tap all 4 with EGT's otherwise you're getting a cooler detection of heat at the downpipe. At the down pipe the heat has had time to be absorbed into other parts of your engine such as the turbo on its way to the pipe.

I'm just tryig to prevent misinformation.

Anything past the turbo runs about 200* (F) cooler than what is coming out of the head. If you're going to do it, you might as well do it right, IMOHO.

Hmm..

Actually, I do not think he is so bad off by putting the probe in the downpipe. As long as you know the temp diff, it is good. First off all, the only true accurate way is by having 4 EGT probes. Therefore, none of us are 100% accurate. That being said, it is a metter of preference of which is deemed more important. By putting a probe in one runner, you are banmking on the knowledge that this wouldbe the generally accepted hottest runner and gambling that none of the other cylinders will have a problem. This is a somewhat sound theory, but what if something happens to another cylinder and it overheats. Something unexpected like a fuel injector malfunctioning on one of the cylinders you do not have a probe in. Didn't do much good to help that. The idea of the probe in the down pipe is that it will give youa lower temp because of heat loss to other components, but it gives you a general temp of all the runners so that if one has a problem it will significantly affect this overall temp. Now, I am not saying this is a 100% method either. You do run into the problem of heat loss to other components and perhaps a slightly slower response time on the EGT's. What I am saying is that neither is 100% so I think it really doesn't matter either way. Personally, I have chosen to go the down pipe direction. I am open to any thoughts or arguments on my logic.

I think your installer was worried that the probe would block exhaust flow or that if the probe breaks, it would toast the turbo...

you should move your probe though...

Actually, I think HRC recommended that I mount it on the collector on the exhaust manifold. I think it was a rumor that the probe be mounted after the turbo on the downpipe.

Anyhow, I mounted mine on the #4 runner on the exhaust manifold. Is's extremely useful! I have so much more peace of mind with it. the guage makes you think twice, sometimes when the temps go "kinda high" on a hard 3rd gear run when you see your engine gett'in kinda hot. (Much better than the "since I don't see the risk, it's not there" attitude)

I like to pick and choose my runs and find most of my enjoyment when I lay down the throrttle on a second gear shift and get thrown back by the turbo boost :-) Back to the EGT guage though, I consider it a MUST for these setups. The Westach probe and guage should run you no more than $75-80. Furthermore, taking that cost into effect with what value it gives you is immeasureable!

...do you know where online I could get a Westach clamp style EGT?

Hey Skrilla,

You can get the clamp style at Westach. I'm not sure they have the best deal on their own products, but they're fair and always have people to answer their phones and are knowledgeable about their products (when I call, it sounds as if you're speaking with actual engineers rather than salespeople). Very nice people. Their probes are reknowned for being effective and fast-reacting. I've heard that any guage will work with the thermocouple (probe). I just bought westach's because theirs go as high as 1650 degrees and also shows the corresponding celsius temperature. I have it on my car and it's very clear and bright. I think the picture here is a bit misleading as far as clarity. I also like the "functional", black faced look.

Tom Stangl has posted an incomplete vfaq on it here that has the part numbers for the various style probes that you're looking at:

http://www.vfaq.com/mods/EGT.html

I see you're considering the clamp-style Skrilla, but I would recommend the Probe (bayonnet style). I had orginally ordered the clamp style with the intent on mounting it on the downpipe, but then called Bill Hahn myself and he said to mount it on the exhaust manifold. Well, I tried to see if I could mount the clamp-style probe on the exhaust manifold and it was an awkward looking fit. Thusly, I called Westach back and they happily allowed me to exchange the clamp-style with the bayonnet style and I'm extremely happy with the fit and finish of this type.

It comes with a weld-on bung ND a compression nut that fits either directly into the bung or in the exhaust manny (your preference). It's very nice looking there with a clean finish.

This is a recent addition for me even though I've had the probe for awhile. (cold weather sucks) I'm VERY HAPPY with it and I have a much better indication of how my engine feels with this tool. The probe responds so quickly that it'll get hotter and cooler immeditely as I shift and apply throttle. Corresponds about as quickly my rpm's do. I also like employing a triple guage pod now as well.

Make sure and get a 1/8" NPT tap if you want to do the installation yourself. I decided to take it to a performance shop to have it tapped in. Doesn't look hard, but I have a knack to mess things up for some jobs, such as this one involving a drill on a curved surface, so I took it to the experts. :-)

Good luck. I'd be glad to answer anymore questions anyone has on this!
