15996, How much boost can stock rods handle?
Posted by Dualgen2, Feb-19-02 03:04 AM
Just wondering if anyone here just got pistons and rings and not rods whihc I might be forced to do cause lack of $. I was wondering if I would be safe running 10psi daily and 12psi on race gas w/ stock rods. Even if I gotta stregthen the rods like stan did its much cheaper then buying rods. Please dont waste time saying buy rods unless u wanna hand them over cause Im short is $ department but car is fucked now so Im trying to get it rebuilt soon.

stock rods will for the most part handle a hahn stage 2 kit for a while, thats what 8-9 lbs. I know there are some on this board who have run 10 lbs no problems yet (YET) you should be fine for a while until you can save up the money to replace rods.

Prepped stock rods can handle like 350HP.

You need to have them bushed for a floating wrist pin for them to work with any aftermarket piston. As far as strengening, have them shot peened at least, and/or cryotreated, if you see fit.

I don't have any test results to prove it, but I think stock rods should be able to hold to somewhere around 300-325HP. I ran 10 PSI daily until my pistons and rings gave out. During the rebuild, the rods looked excellent. Actually, so did the pistons--no visual signs of detonation--except, for the cracked piston rings. I personally think the two cracked pistons were caused from the power the higher boost was putting out.

Well all I did was have them shotpeened and the the beams polished (reduces change of stress cracks forming). Yeah you need them bushed to use aftermarket pistons (I dont think the stock ones are bushed at all). It cost about $200 for all four and I know they can handle 10psi all day every day with the stock rev limiter. The way I treated them no way in hell they would have survived as long as they did (and still are). Remember I had nitrous on em long before I even ran the turbo.
