15491, 420A-4G63 Engine Swap Question?
Posted by elude, Feb-11-02 12:24 PM
hey guyz.. got a quick question.. my cousin got a 1997 eclipse spyder gs-t.. and i got a 99 eclipse rs... i was pissed he got a turbo...but hes cool...but anyways.. he is willing to let me swap.. and i was wondering if it would be possible to engine swap his 4G63 and 420A?? how hard would it be?? how long?? and how much?? what would i need and so on... we both got Manual trannies so i just need some advice, if there is like help out there.. thanks..
15492, No...

You can't do it. It's too hard and requires too much money. Everything under the hood is totally differemnt including the trannies. For a fraction of the cost, you can get a turbo kit for your 420a.

However, if it makes you feel better, you can read the alternative answers for fantasy time: ;-)

and i was wondering if it would be
>possible to engine swap his 4G63 and 420A??

Oh, it's a super easy swap! It's not only possible, we do it here ALL THE TIME! :-)

how hard would
>it be??

Not hard at all. It usually only takes about 15 minutes. You just need to switch out the valve covers and put a turbo on. That's all!

how long??

Again, about 15 minutes.

and how much??

About $50. $10 for the valve cover and maybe $40 more for the used turbo.

what would i need and so
>on... we both got Manual trannies so i just need some
>advice, if there is like help out there.. thanks..

No problem man. That's all you need, a turbo and a valve cover! :-)

It can be done and it is NOT cheap. Take the advice above. We are doing a 420A auto swap to a 2G 4G63 manual right now. The customers bill will be $7500-$8000. The motor is a stock rebuilt, tranny will have 30K and we are using a big 16G. Everything else is stock.

Things to consider: even though you are a manual trans

Complete K frame swap, Rt/Lt engine mount swaps(cut and weld), redo of fuel lines(fairly easy), everything in engine bay swapped(pain in the ass) including radiator, etc. etc.

I do not recommend this unless you have access to used parts like we do locally. If this was a dedicated race car, then this might be an option that is feasible. I know you must be just thinking out loud, but this is a bad route to go IMHO.

Why don't you just trade cars? Less work, noone gets dirty and you end up with the same result.

You would need a complete GST for all the parts to make it work, Tranny, Engine, ECU, wiring harnesses, motor mounts, downpipe, etc etc etc. . . You may as well just buy a GST and swap your RS sticker on to it.

Q: Can I install a GS-T engine in my NT?
A: Yes, but it is an extremely difficult and very expensive operation. It would be necessary to change the motor mounts, install a GS-T tranny, and finally change the whole wiring harness and ECU. It would be better to sell the car and just buy a GS-T. Here is a breakdown of the components and approximate costs:
1. 4G63 turbo engine (stock) $1500
2. transmission (stock GS-T FWD) $500
3. wiring harness for engine $300
4. 4G63 ECU (stock) $300
5. shift linkage $200
6. custom engine mounts $200
7. chassis cross member $100
8. complete exhaust $200
9. intercooler, turbo, related parts $500
10. boost gauge/fuel filter, etc $300
11. Installation $1500
This totals $5600, and doesn't include unforeseen obstacles in the installation. For about $2000, you should be able to get over 100 hp out of the stock 420A motor with porting, valvetrain and electronics modifications.

just turbo your 420A, stronger engine, last longer, already in your car so you'll save a ton of cash
