I was just wondering what happens to your smog tests when you get these turbo kits? Can you still pass smog without doing anything?

U dont need to rebuild your engine. You just cant run a lot of boost. Most people dont rebuild their motors until they wanna run more then 10 psi. Im running 6 intercooled now and as of this Wednesday Ill be pushing it up to 8psi w/ bigger injectors and my AFC hooked up and tuned. I dont suggest going much higher then that. At the track I might try 10 psi on race gas eventually but we will see.

To actually answer your question. YES, the emission test is 1 of the only downfalls to turboing instead of supercharging. What happens is the turbocharger is using the wasted exhaust gas to power the turbine. Because of this, the cat will take longer to come on because it comes on at a certain temp. If the turbo is taking all the exhaust and using it, it wont actually do anything when it is suppose to. It is possible to fail, Yes. I passed mine though. =]

You might pass the emession part. The problem is the visual part if the mechanic know what he is looking for.

I have never had a mechanic look under the hood of my car or anything on a smog test, just looks under to see a cat, runs the tailpipe test, gas tank vapor test and thats it... but I dont have to pass smog tests or have a muffler now where i registered at.

You should pass smog, cause I don't think your turbo should spool while doing the smog test. I tested mine in neutral and reved to about 3 grand and the turbo did nothing. You should be fine. By the way, I live Reno, Nv....and I've NEVER had a mechanic pop the hood and look underneath when doing an emissions test. They just hook up to the tail pipe and look for the cat(s).

Smog tests are peformed when the car is already warm. The cat heating up is not an issue. To cool down your cat they would have to allow your car to sit for quite some time which is not going to happen. The amount of time it takes to heat up is ridiculously short imo anyway. I passed emissions cleaner with my turbo than I did non-turbo the first time I went. The second time I was running VERY rich so I failed but not by much. Turbos do not fail emissions. Removing the cats and using big injectors causes the problem. Turbos are efficient. That is how they make power. They looked at my engine. In fact, the guy recognized it was a 420A with a turbo and we discussed the mods right before he gave me a certificate.

Emissions is a state to state based question. Cali people should be aware that I think they are the only state who actually does more than the gas cap and cat for visual. Remember, carb exempt means California Air Resource Board, not US. How many times have you heard the phrase legal in 49 states. ;)

Oh, btw, several states do not require emissions. In GA, only around the Atlanta area do they require emissions. The rest of the state is emissions free. Then you have Florida. The whole state does not require emissions.

Im in Chicago and this old dude gave me crap about my CEL! Those basterds plug into my ECU and checked my CODES!!!}> The guys like " You know whats wrong with your car?" I was like ya some emmisions shit is f*cking up my codes! The sheet they gave me is trying to make passing the OBDII a requirment. As if I care. Still passed by a loooongg shot! If I HAD a turbo I would just run the car hard before the test to make sure the cats worm and just take the test.

Do they put your cars on dyno's too? In IL they put your car on a dyno like thing to simulate load on the motor. They don't even strap the car down or anything! I'm cool with green peace but I think the roller should be left for tuning not emmision tests.
