15074, Going Turbo (Maybe) Posted by lap561, Feb-05-02 04:40 AM
Can some of you tell me what I need to put a stage 1 turbo on my RS. Some of the things I'm concern about is: 1. how much it costs, 2. will it hurt the engine, 3. what kind of maintenance I'll have to do afterwards (someone told me that turbo engine needs frequent oil changes), 4. what do i need to do to the car before getting turbo kit 5. ???anything I forgot to ask.
I've been reading the posts and some say this is the cheapest way to go faster.

1.Depends what stage. Install is free-DO IT YOURSELF. 2.Could, also depends on boost you run. 3.Oil change every 2500miles instead of 3000. 4.Compression test. 5.Need A/F, EGT, and some kind of aftermarket exhaust.

1. how much it costs? ALOT, around $3000 for a stage 2 HRC, around $600-$1000 for install depending on the shop. Free if you do the install yourself. Learn alot in advance if you plan on doing it yourself, and have several free days, lots of cold beer/soda, a few friends hanging out, the pizza guys number handy, a first aid kit, a second car to run to Autozone/Radio Shack...
2. will it hurt the engine? Yes. More power = more stress on engine. Just the way it is. If you're going to go turbo, be preparred for worst case scenario. (Engine Rebuild) Most of us turbo people do this eventually even if we don't need to because it allows for alot more power.
3. what kind of maintenance I'll have to do afterwards (someone told me that turbo engine needs frequent oil changes)? Plugs changed more often, be preparred to eventually change the headgasket, oil changes at 2500.
4. what do i need to do to the car before getting turbo kit. Tune Up, Spark plugs one range colder than stock.
5. anything I forgot to ask. Make sure to have an EGT gauge and probe (I have the GReddy), have a boost gauge (Autometer works just fine) and a catback exhaust helps, but isn't 100% needed for stage 1 or 2.

I believe I just said all that. Do the turbo install YOURSELF. Its a complete WASTE of money to get someone else to do it. Doing it it yourself will also provide you with the information of being able to fix something yourself if its not too big. Like an intercooler leak. If all of a sudden one day your not getting boost your gonna be like WTF and call the shop that installed it and pay them tons of money to do a 5minute job.

if you want to strictly be stage 1 or whatever, just buy the kit and make sure you maintain your car. Hehe and istall it right also. The stage 1 and 2 kits are made so you just install them and forget it and just use it. Minimal tuning. When you want to really squeeze all you can out of the turbo that's why you start buying all those other goodies like EGT/AF gauges, exhuast (hehe might want to have one already), oil cooler, injectors, etc...
