14365, Cool 2.0/2.4 liter conversion with turbo setup (cool neon stuff) Posted by JasonESi_T, Jan-21-02 03:46 PM
I can't stop reading all this cool neon stuff lately.
Here's a cool website with a couple of guys switching out their 2.0 liter to a 2.4 liter while retaining the head and making use of some 2.4 liter mexican turbo internals and manifold.
With all of the neon, stratus, avenger...etc. available out there, I'm really surprised more people here haven't done some of these cool conversions. You can use bigger internals, lower compression, higher compression, more displacement...whatever!

People are waiting for the Howell auto stroker kit..hell, just go to your nearest junkyard and pull a 2.4 liter stratus engine and stick it in. Apprarently those things match up to our heads with some minor motor mount alterations!

well if you can get those parts cheap I say go for it but making use of watcha got sounds like a better deal to me. We can get a stroker kit also.
Heh but if dem mexican engine parts are tough stuff might not be a bad deal. What do they redline at though? I would guess that you'd gain a lot of low end an mid end power with that block.

the 4G63 guys are finally seein the light and also goin over to the 2.4 from the 4G64 engine setup, cheaper and better than a 1G engine. shows how much everyone thinks ups the same things later "Z"

But the stratus block can only rev to 6500 rpm due to the balance shafts. I'll just keep going to 7,200 rpm with my 2.0L for the time being. . . . }>

Not like it's hard to remove balance shafts.. and i'm sure the rev limit is built into the ECU, just like ours. Use our ECU, remove the balance shafts, 7200RPM redline.

What make you think that bottom end is going to stay together above 6500 rpm where they have their ECU set at? About a year ago Skrilla, Michael and I had a similar conversation. There were some others talking about this also but we discussed and ruled this out and figured out that a stroker would be cheaper and since the 420A 2.0L spins to 8200 rpm no problem with the Neon ECU replacement a 2.4 Stroked should hit our redline of 7200 rpm with no problems.
I am not saying it can't be done, I am not saying I wouldn't do it, I'm just saying that the Stroked 2.0 seems like a better option with less worrys.

True, but i have no doubt in my mind the 2.4L block would spin just fine to 7200 and possibly beyond.. Perhaps we should look up what the Neon guys are redlining this thing at..

I always thought that what kept it from being able to rev higher was the ValveTrain.. not the bottom end... was I right in thinking that?

yeah me too, agree with what breezio said, y would the bottom end restrict how fast the engine can spin??

Rods can only spin so fast, and given a set stroke and bore you can determine the exact feet/per second the rod travels. Just about any rod will fail if is is moved quicker than 4500ft/sec, simply due to the stress of having to change direction at the given speed.
Valve trains have more moving parts, but they spin at half the speed of the crank.

My neon buddy, currently has the fastest daily driven all motor neon in the country actually (12.9), has a 2.4L block with the 2.0 head
He revs to 8200 rpms, stock bottom end. safe? no, but its working for now until he can afford to rebuild the bottom end with higher compression slugs.
hes running a stock 2.4L block, quad throttle bodies, race header (no exaust at the track), cams, stand-alone, mild head work, lil suspenion work and slicks. 12.90's in one bad-ass lil 4 door 4 banger.
He just bought another neon and is planning on doing a 2.4L Turbo street car in this one.
also about revving high....you dont have to rev high if you can make power down low. rpm=Ruins People's Motors. If you can make just as much power (or more power) with lower revs, there is no reason to rev high. Honda's have to rev high because they have no low-mid range, same reason most 4 bangers have to rev high.
btw, a stock 2.4L (the older ones, the newer ones might even make more) makes 170 ft-lbs of torque and 150 hp...STOCK! thats a 40ftlb and 10 hp increase over a stock 2.0!! now just imagine the torque monster yould have with a hairdryer attached!

ok where can I find out more about this I would realy be interested in trying this either on my eclipse or my buddies neon that would be one sweet as sleeper. Manly I would like to try it on my eclipse. Also I know buscher makes a balance shaft eliminator kit would that work on the 2.4?

i think i remember seeing an 11 sec neon in the new sportcompactcar.

i take that back thou, the one in the magazine wasn't daily driven (at least i doubt it, stripped interior etc etc)
