13976, Does pulling timing affect your EGT's?? Posted by Greg, Jan-22-02 04:28 PM
I have the MSD Programable DIS-2 box and have been playing around with it latley. Here's my situation. I'm currently running 15psi of boost with 0 degree's of timing retard CUZ, when I try to pull 8 degree's of timing @ 15psi of boost my EGT's wanna sky rocket as in fly past 900 (1652)!! (My EGT's are at 850 (1562) peg'd after a long 4th gear pull with 0 degree's pulled) I'm not sure if it's really Lean or just maybe to much fuel and there's after burn in the exhaust manifold and that's making my EGT's raise. Do EGT's normally raise when timing is pulled?? Or is there some way I might have the DIS-2 hooked up wrong so it's advancing timing?? Is that even possible?? I do know the only way to figure this out for sure it to strap it to a dyno and see what the wideband 02 reads. I don't have any money at the time so I'm looking for all the help I can get ;-)

Greg,
Assuming you have not changes the fuel maps whatsoever when you pull timing, you are getting afterburn. I had this problem for a while. When you pull the timing the car tends to run rich which leaves unburned fuel in the manifold that will ignite and give inaccurate egt's. You will need to tune again for the timing being pulled.

Thanks Chris ;-) Can anyone else realate to my situation or have any input?? So Will my A/F ratio show my car to running more rich or more lean with afterburn? Or will I blow lots of black smoke?? (I have not looked yet) I need to Dyno tune bad! :'(

A/F ratio gauge will show rich. you will blow lots of black smoke.
A.D.P. bring it on............

and it's 8* of timing waaaaay too much to pull at 15psi?

I'd just confirm those retarded timing numbers on your datalogger for peace of mind. The numbers can't lie. If your timing's pulled more so than "normal" conditions, it's most likely afterburn like Chris is saying.
It's not fair, is it? High temps when your lean and high temps when you're really rich! hehehe
