13694, Turbo vs. Supercharged and steps to getting there. Long, sorry.

Hi, this is one of my first posts, but i hope to get into this more. I jsut started getting into cars this year, thanks to all the gearheads at my school and i went out and got an 97 eclipse gs. I have alot of work to do on it, and need help. I know there is probably this post already as on forums posts are repeated constantly, but i looked and didnt find one that answere my questions.

First, What is recommended by you guys, Turbo or supercharger? Why? Is there even a well known supercharger for this car?

What would be my steps to getting there? Should buy a kit that comes with all the neccessary parts or should i go peice by piece?

What parts could i get before getting the turbo if i did go seperate?

What is the best way to get this stuff cheap. Some of my frieds say to go to junkyard and get a stock system from a wreck, and the upgrade that, is that a good idea?

Any other info you guys care to give me would be helpfull, and thanks.

The search function is wonderful for this ;-)

There is no supercharger available for our cars. I've heard stories of a prototype made, but it was scapped as a production kit due to the drag the SC placed on the engine.

Easier if you buy a kit. Trying a custom setup isbetter left to those that really, really know what they're doing.

Buy an EGT gauge and probe, buy a digital air/fuel gauge, and a 3 pod a-pillar to hold them ;-)

No. None of it will fit as a direct swap, two totally different engines.

if you're like me and still waiting to save money for the turbo kit.. (which will cost you 2000+)... then there are things you can do first.

GST muffler upgrade is good for up to 200 hp. Save the real exhaust work for after you get the turbo.. cuz then you can do some custom 3" pipework.

Spark plug and wires.

All suspension work.

AF/X Underdriver Pulley

Energy Suspension Poly-Urethane Motor Mounts (if you think wheel hop is bad now... wait until you turbo)

Basically all the stuff i mentioned is to make your car more efficient so that when the turbo is put in, you'll be smooth and ready already set to push your car to the limits safely.

I'm basically just telling you what i'm doing to prepare for turbo.. i'm sure there is other stuff that can be done too.

I forgot all about gauges dino... looks like i have to add something else to my checklist of pre-turbo things.

Do what Mystic and Dino said. Prepare! I personally just put the HRC Stage 2 on my stock ESi. My next purchases are a turbo timer and a boost controller. Also a short throw (because it reduces throw for that 1/10 of a sec. and I always seem to miss 3rd when I'm shifting from 2nd and I heard a short throw will help with that). Also, definately put on better springs and struts and all that. Get your guages (Air Fuel Ratio, Boost, and EGT's...although I've been told that an EGT guage isn't that necessary if you pushing little amounts of boost. I'm running 5 right now, but might want to ask other people about that ish). Definately go turbo over supercharger for at least 2 reasons:

1) Less wear on your engine.
2) There is no kit for our cars.

Good luck!

i think the first thing you should do is learn how turbo's work and learn about your motor...spend a good amount of time here and search the internet for info about turboes and stuff(howstuffworks.com is a good sstart) I've also heard good things about Corky Bell's book on turbocharging.

Disclaimer: spending time on this site will get you hooked. You are likely to find yourself spending more money than you can afford on your car. You are bound to go hungry for the weekend to add a few dollrs to your turbo piggy bank.

Enjoy

check out Wyatt's site got a lotta good info there. www.turbogs.com
Also check out HRCs site good readin there too.

Basically you should try to maintain your car as well as possible. Change oil, do a compression check, etc.... You can try to read up on the fuel system which might help some.

Things you might want when you get the turbo are like they said a turbo timer, AF ratio gauge, Boost gauge, and an EGT. Then you can really start tuning. Haha I say turbo timer also because peeps always say they can wait in the car to cool the turbo down but after doing it like a thousand time staring at the clock you look like a dumbass and it gets realyl annoying, so save yourself the trouble and get the turbo timer. Oh yes and the thing about motormounts is true bwahaha

Thanks guys for the advice, and sorry for not replying earlier, i tried and i couldnt get to the forums.

I do know a lot about turbo's ,a nd how they work, the basics, advanced, differences, and physics of them, i dont know much about the engine itself, but that is why i am here. This is something that i plan on spending more time on before i purchase anything. I am not a wrench-head - but am very mechanicaly inclined.I go to Kettering University, what used to be GMI (general motor institute) so there are plenty of people to help me out. Thanks again, and ill keep reading and postin.
