13317, Turbocharge or get GSX?
Posted by SlikGS, Jan-12-02 10:02 AM
Right now I have a 97GS with an exhaust and body kit and rims. Is it worth turbocharging our engines if I could afford to buy a GST or GSX?

Me and only me if I had the chance I'll buy a 2g GSX cause I love the AWD deal and turbo is a big plus but is up to you. What you want? What are you trying to do? You like FWD or AWD? Some people wants to go and some wants the show and some wants to do both.again What you want? You want to make something turbo or have something already turbo? Is all upto you.

I have done both. I turboed my 2gnt and I bought an AWD DSM. My opinion on the topics are this:

The 4G63 turbo AWD DSM is a monster. It is as fast as my 2gnt-T is, and it is stock. (other than an airfilter).

If you want to keep FWD, stay with the 2gnt. The tranny alone is worth it. Plus no crankwalk.

If you want bang for the buck speed, get an AWD 1st gen. Find a good deal like I did and you save lots of money while still being really fast....and THEN you get to start modding.

If I had to do it all over again, I would of gone with the AWD in the first place. But that is just my opinion.

It sounds like you already spent a good amount of money on your car already. I have a stage 2 and I love it, I plan to do internals and see how much hp I can push out of it. I think it would be cheaper for you just to keep your car and put a turbo on it. Just check our www.turbosystem.com and it will help you decide what you want to do.

To be honest with you, the only reason i got a GS instead of GS-T is because of insurence. I save like $600 a year for turboing a non-turbo car rather than buying a car with a turbo. I have yet to find a GS-T to beat me also. Im sure one could, i just havent found him!! Even my friend with 15psi cant beat me. Pretty much even. to My 9psi. Im assuming you want a 2G here. 1G--go for it. Light as a civic, awd and more power.

the 1st gen AWD is not light as a civic. They still weigh 3000+ lbs.

don't forget.. we are a 2gnt forum.. so we're pretty biased. hehe.. but yea, here's how i'm looking at it.

NT has cheaper insurance.
2g's look better then 1g's.
getting a 2g turbo is just TOO easy. everyone and their mom knows the potential and the 4g63 engine, and it has already been pushed to it's limits. It's just a breeze to copy someone elses buildup.
I like the challenge of having my dodge neon engine, and knowing that it has alot of potential.
Especially now since the Neon SRT-4 is coming out. (2.4 L turbo'd engine) Basically it's a modified 420a (our engine) and when you think about it, anything they did to soop that car up, we can probably do to our NT's. So yes, we have alot of potential too, and one day you can say that you were one of the first people to do it.

There's other things too.. and plan to spend alot of money.. but you know.. when those people first started sooping up GST's and GSX's, i bet they had to spend alot of money too.

>3000+ lbs.

if its not as light as a civic then wtf is the purpose of getting that over a 2g?? its ugly in my opinion. I figured cuz its kinda smaller and less bubblely it would be lighter. lol...

cause u can get them dirt cheap, they are a tad lighter than a 2g, no crankwalk, and 92.5's got a beefier tranny :)

main reason is u can get em dirt cheap tho :) find a decent condition 92.5 for 3-6K, put 2-3K into it, and run low 12's daily...

i would still rather have a turbo-d avenger tho :)
hehe ;)

AWD is the shit.Seriously, you don't seem to have spent too much yet on your car right now.I'd say go for the 2G GSX(looks and balls outta the box).If you play your cards right, you can transfer your bodykit and rims to the GSX and go all out on go fast goodies after.

I bought my 91 TSi AWD for $4,300. 83k miles and in Perfect condition all over.

I am paying 800 dollars LESS per year for insurance than my '99 Eclipse GS.

I used to dislike the looks of the 1st gen. Then I met a guy at my college that has a 91 Eclipse GSX. The more I rode in it and worked on it, the more I liked it. Easy to work on, fun as hell to drive, cheap to mod, and everyone on the street who cares knows what it represents. I get more looks/revs in this stock Talon from other street racers than I did in my Eclipse with the huge FMIC, wheels, and exhaust. The performance potential started to balance out the boxy design and older looks. I really like how the car looks...it grows on you. Especially after working on them for a long time.

As for performance...I guarantee the car is faster than the GS in the 1/4 mile already, and so far I only hacked the air box and dropped in a K&N filter. (32 dollar air filter vs. 4000 dollar turbo kit and exhaust). Another 20 dollars (MBC) and I will have 15psi on the street and running 13s at the track.

Now I am not saying I suddenly dislike the 420A.. I still love the engine and I absolutely still believe in it's potential. But for the money, the 4G63 is the better deal.

The best part about having AWD, (other than the launches), is that I no longer lose power by spinning my way through the 1st 3 gears. I have the power firmly planted to the ground at all times. (though I can manage to spin the wheels off the line right now...even in near stock form).

i have both cars... i love both but my god if u want to be FAST get awd turbo... no matter wat, awd will at a drag race. if u want to spend 3k for a stage 2 and only get to run 7psi and be about as fast as a GST then get it... keep in mind how many peeps on here have blown their motors and look at their timeslips. it's not that they arent making power, it's lack of traction. wats good of huge hp if you cant get that power to the ground? my modded RS was only outwalked by a stage 2 star @ near 6psi

my gsx stock can handidly smoke my RS... i've tried both routes and my nod goes to GSX

what car was this that your RS was outwalked by? Your RS is modded you know, if you were refering to that one time with eugene in the car I don't think that was a fair battle. Lemme see how unfair this sounds: 6psi?! I'm only running 4 psi thanx to mr starion, I had a full load in the car eugene (a big guy), me, and 2 more of my friends, plus the trunk was loaded and you only had your girl friend in the car, another thing is that I think Eugene was just playing around so I could get a good camera angle. I think it was pretty warm out also heat effects turbo performance a lot. Need I say more?

I you wanna pay a lotta money for insurance and get a little turbo go for the GSX. Don't forget about there being more moving parts and mitsubishi's repuation for defective goodies so there's more stuff to break. If you absolutely must have AWD get the GSX or even better wait for the EVO to come out.

I've got a ?. A lot of you NT with turbo's always use the argument of insurance, I have cheaper insurance. What if someone Nails your car in the front and messes up your FMIC, and turbo etc...then you are out 2800 or more that you will not get back. This unless you have your turbo kit insured which I'm sure would make rates increase. Where as my car gets nailed I've covered completely. There's a reason you pay more on a GSX, GST. Think about it.

Just some food for thought.

hey now dont be upset. it's all good :)

im jess stating that i saw that's all. U are turbo after all and i have BPUs. no one's hating on it. anyways, everyone talks about prices... well lets see a stage 2 is wat? 2800 about? and how much is rebuild kit? 1200? cuz u know ur gonna need it cuz our pistons WILL blow sooner or later. labor? 500-1000? exhaust? 400? christ, $ game is gay

get the X cuz in the back of ur head u know u want it. who would rather roll in a 420a versus gsx is beyond me. it's not the engine it's more the drivetrain.

well if you want the ultimate horsepower go get your self a 4G powered beast but turbocharged 420 is good enough for me. And it's the rings that blow first not the pistons, the pistons are quite strong.

What I got is enough to make me happy I'm sure when a GSX see's that I'm keeping up with his ass quite well and see's my RS badge I'll get a million cool points! bwahahaha
