Well every time i shift to 5th it grinds....and the other night..i got on it pretty good..and for 15 min i couldn shift to 1st, 3rd or 5th..but then all of a sudden i could shift into these gears..like everything was fine..what does all this mean? is my tranny goin? how long do I have..and what does it cost to fix this stuff...im sure 30psi of boost isnt great for a stock tranny..but thats the only area of the car that I really do not know to much about...any ideas or help?

i would take off your center consol, and look at the linkage cables.
i had a buddy with the same problem. the thing that was wrong was a plastic cylinder peice that connected sum cable. it got loose, and he couldnt shift into 1,3,5 gears.

a lil jb weld, and it was fixed.

well i had a problem earlier with that..and my local shop said the clip on the top of the tranny broke off (ya i shift realllll hard) and a prelude clip worked....but i dunno..i dont think its that..but i could be wrong

Those clips could be anything from a hardware store cotter pin to a paper clip, it doesn't matter.

Sounds like your 5th gear syncro is about done for, tho. I'd start looking for a junkyard tranny, because i've been quoted anything from $1200 to $1600 to rebuild mine when i shredded my 1st gear syncro. I got a used tranny for $500 w/ only 35,000 miles on it to my 95,000 at the time.

Dude, it's not like it's gonna scatter all over the freeway or something. Calm down.. I drove mine for 30K+ miles with NO first gear syncro. It's not gonna kill you, just something to think about. Relax.

I'll buy yer DFI for $20 ;-)

Yeah I drove with a fucked 2nd gear synchro for like 20,000 miles. I got a used trannt for $750 and found out afterwards that it had 85,000 miles on it and the 2nd gear synchro was going bad but is still okay right now. Run a carfax report on the VIN on the tranny to find out the mileage for sure before you buy it which is what I should have done. Satan wanted $1200 just in parts to fix my tranny. Thats why $750 was fine for me. :)

yep, time for a new manual tranny, isnt there a bad ass 6 speed we can bolt up for like +15K? hehe, just get a tranny with low miles from a salvage yard, or see what a shop will charge to fix it. Goto Poff's Transmissions in Georgetown. Ask me for directions if you need. They are a small business, but they do good work, and very good prices. If you take them performance parts, they'll install them for whatever the labor is... When I wrecked my 240sx, I fucked up the tranny and I was stuck in 2nd gear, could get anything else... took it to poffs, they pulled it, tore it down, fixed it, put it back together, put it back in, all for $250 bucks, you cant beat that... new tranny oil included. I can pull trannys and change clutchs and throw out bearings and shit, but thats about as far as i can go... and i was time limited back then. hit them up, or get a new tranny and take it to them to swap em out... How big of a bitch is it to drop our tranny's guys? I've never got into that, the clutch was installed by the previous owner the day i bought it actually....

the tranny is a bitch to take out and a bitch to put back in. If i had a lift it might have been EASY but I had to lay on my back for 8 hours a damn day for 3 days. It wasnt fun.

ahh, sounds like a good ol' time :-) and i have a tranny stand...from when i used to have to drop the tranny in my 240sx all the time... i dont mind the hard labor, i like it. I'll do just about anything before I take it to a shop and pay for labor, that shits a bitch and never cheap at all.... and they have all the tools to do it 10x easier than any of us could do it...and charge an arm and a leg...fxck em all. has anyone been quote on labor to drop out the tranny and put it back in?

$700, two different places.

I paid $250 for labor to drop my broken tranny, replace my stock clutch with the CM Stage 3 and put in the used tranny I brought with me. $250 plus the fluid cost of $14 per qt for mopar fluid. I went to a local tranny shop and got the hook up!

good deal, i'd probably pay 250 to drop and reinstall a tranny, cause in the time it takes them to do it, i could go to work, sell some electronics and make 250bux to pay it, and not have to mess with the many busted knuckles, bruises, headache, etc..., and have a warrenty.. thats what they charged to do my 240sx, but i heard the the 420a's tranny was a lot harder and more labor intensive...
