12310, Port and Polish
Posted by eclipsers88, Dec-17-01 02:16 PM
Hi,
My friend says that if I port and polish me heads it will give me some good power. He says a local shop will do it for around $200. I was wondering if this was a good thing to do to my car.

Yes it is a good mod, but since you don't have any mods yet (as noted by your sig) I would start with some cheaper and less labor intensive mods (plugs, wires, 55mm TB, UDP...)

He said $200 bucks and you said try something cheaper!!
plugs wires= $37.00-$110.00 MSD are cheap. =)
plugs=$2.00-$14.00 each
55mm TB= over $200.00
UDP= over $200.00 also.

get the port and polish done then get a UDP then you can still tell people your stock.

toykilla, what are you talking about?

Wires = 50.00 at most (you don't need MSD wires, but at least 7mm)
Plugs = 10.00 at most for a set of 4 (NGK are fine)
55mm TB = 100.00 from howell
UDP = 155.00 from ptuning

all good mods and all under 200.00

wow, never seen at trottle body under $200 and what are you talking about.? the MSD's are the best and they are the only high performance AWESOME wires you will get for under $50.00. Like i said $37.00. It also doesnt matter how big there are. i still say get hte port and polish. you might as well because if i didnt do the turbo when i had the cash i doubt it would have ever been done. DO expensive stuff first!!! =)

I'll reply one last time, and then I'm done. http://www.howellautomotive.com will be happy to bore your throttle body to 55mm for 100 + tax (around 106.00). A good mod for turbo'd and NA engines alike. I see labeling a plug wire as “high performance” a gimmick; since a plug wire doesn’t add performance just make sure you car performs its best. Magnecore, MSD, NGK and others are fine. Wire size does matter. For example, Magnecore 8.5mm wires are 2.5mm conductors and the rest (6mm) is insulation to protect the wire from heat and emission of EMI. I quoted 7mm because 7 - 8mm usually gives you a good conductor and plenty of insulation in high heat situations (as those experienced in high revving engines).

I'd say start with the simple bolt-on first. I/E/ Udp

Exhaust and Intake already on their way. Do plugs and wires really do a whole lot?

Thanks

Could help idle; not a "performance" mod per say, but a must if you want your engine to run in top shape.

i found that with upgraded wires, that my idle is more stable, and that getting up in the rpm range was smoother.

i woudl definately upgrade your wires, and get NGK plugs

Don't waste your time p&p your head if you haven't modified your car yet. You will not feel the power increase you have wished for. Only after doing other things will you feel a significant increase. Start off with the basic upgrades first.
