12241, Stage 1 :auto vs. manual Posted by eklipz, Dec-16-01 06:51 AM
For all turbo owners does a Stage 1 auto have the same performance time as with a manual? if not ,how much of a difference? Also, will a Stage 1,either auto or manual, take a GSR? any info is greatly appreciated, thanks

no, the 5 spd is a lot faster...the auto is still a dawg off the line.
from a roll, a 5 spd gsr would be a good race, off the line the gsr will take it tho.
at 4-5 lbs, figure an auto is a low 16 sec car, maybe high 15s if you can get a real nice launch. from a roll tho, the car is a lot more dangerous ;)
example:
Me at 5lbs vs BMW 323
off the line, i ran a 5 spd 323 convertible with 2 passnegrs (i had 1 passenger, he pulled 1/2 a car off the line
I ran a 323 coupe 5 spd from a 50 mph roll and put several car lengths on him easily.
a stage 1 auto is definitely not a speed demon, but its a LOT more fun, figure you just went from 17s into the 15s(but you will be saving for an FMIC after the 1st week ;) )
My personal goal is 14s on stock internals with the auto...im installing the FMIC now, bigger injectors on there way, and a spare intake manifold is being P&P too :)

I think any turboed 420a would get atleast 15's. At 4-5 pounds of boost you would beat a GSR easily. Unless the GSR is modded.

My cars auto, and I'm going HRC stage1 soon -- and your telling me a GS-R will take me? What the hell...Auto are a dog off the line even when turbo? Even with brake-torqueing? Cant autos create boost before launching?
I just thought a turbocharged 420A auto or not could run 15's at least.

not with that big a turbo and stock torque convertor its not going to boost off the line. And sure it still sucks off the line, no boost to start and added weight :)

you can power brake, but if you have a stock stall speed torque convertor, ur still launching in vacuum
think about it...stock 5 spds run mid 16s...stock autos are running anywhere from mid 17's to low 18's...they have a full second advantage to begin with.
if a stage 1 5 spd is capable of pulling high 14's, then a stage 1 is _capable_ of pulling high 15s. from a roll, the car feels great, its just a dawg off the line. you just added 100 lbs of stuff and u cant get into boost right there.
get a 3000 or 3200 rpm or so stall torqe convertor and its a different story. but w/ the stock stall speed, challenge the gsr from a roll, not out of the whole ;)
turbos are great things but 5 lbs of boost isnt gonna turn a 18 sec car into a v8 killer.
be realistic w/ ur goals or youll always be disappointed.
I asked this question a long time before i got boost, and people were saying they saw auto boosted 2gnts running 16.4's or so. its all about the launch, if you can cut a 2.2 or 2.3, then youll be in the 15s. its just hard to do w/ our trannies.

Shit. Okay a torque-converter is like what, $1000some dollars....cant do that..
At what rpms range would a Super16G start boosting?

Yes, that is all true for the most part. There was just a discussion about this on the NEDSM board recently and the AT will still be a dog out of the hole BUT has the advantage once it gets moving cause the engine never lifts between shifts. That means the turbo STAYS spooled and there's no lag after the shift. And also, an AT doesn't have to worry about wheelspin (as much) so they could even have an advantage when launching. :) Made me feel a LOT better about being AT after I read all that stuff. I think I deleted most of the digests I've gotten recently but if I find anything backing me up, I'll paste it into a post.

yeah, and the mitsu tranny's can power break more (at least the awd, not sure about fwd), plus they can handle the same power with a smaller turbo, so even more start up power. Ryan, if you really don't care about having no power until 2800 rpm you can have your torque convertor modified by art carr or maybe level ten also does it,for about $200, but then there's also the labor of taking off and putting back on

A torque converter isn't in my near future. I'm not going to even think about going that route due to money and such.
My plans are: Buy HRC Stage1 w/ Super16G - I'm sure I'll be satisfied with that for a while, as it should be a HUGE improvement over my current setup.....
Then after a month or so, buy a FMIC (Starion or something fairly cheap) and buy some custom piping.
After that I'll save for bigger injectors and an S-AFC
With all of the above, I shouldnt be too bad should I? Even as auto.
but I have to think realistically and one step at a time. I'm ust gonna look forward to Stage1 -- Ill think about ther stuff later.

yeap, quarter mile ain't everything, you'll still have plenty of fun driving around, i got an auto too if you din't know, will be turbo soon enuf.

12252, RE: Stage 1 :auto vs. manual Posted by Ryan_Hes, Dec-17-01 03:34 PM
Well, quarter-mile is almost like a gauge against how well you'll do against other cars. For instance, a GS-T runs about a 15.5. If I run a 16 flat, with a stage 1, he'll be faster. I just want to know what I can and can not beat. I dont really want to beat people, I just don't want to lose as much...heh. I think my overall goal is Stage2 HRC w/FMIC and bigger injectors, running a 15
But thats just a dream, all I really want is turbo for now.
Oh yeah -- you say that my boost doest drop between shifts? If so does that mean the throttle plate doesnt close? If so does that mean a BOV wouldn't sound off?

power braking would still make you launch close to spooling. It wouldn't do too bad I wouldn't think.

12254, RE: Stage 1 :auto vs. manual Posted by RyaN95i4, Dec-18-01 10:08 AM
thats what im saying tho...if you race these cars from a roll, which is usally what happens on the street, you lose the disadvantage of the launch. my car is a dawg off the line, regardless of being turbod, but from a 30 mph roll, it puts you back into the seat. ive beat cars from a roll that run a quicker 1/4 mile, because the launch isnt a factor.
if i had a higher stall, then it would be a beast out of the hole too, launching at full boost

Quick question, what is the weight difference between an Avenger and a 2GNT DSM? Might the DSM launch a little bit harder because it is a little bit lighter? Just a thought... -=B-=

wanna spool faster on an auto? buy some nos and go at it with a baby shot, shoot it off the line and boom, you're gone :P

12257, RE: Stage 1 :auto vs. manual Posted by Ryan_Hes, Dec-19-01 07:47 AM
NOS is Illegal ,Explosive, & Expensive (refills...ugh) Plus I think turbo sounds much better... I can't wait to get a kit on my car. One of my first mods will be an aftermarket blowoff valve. We'll see...
