1209, Turbonetics deltagate

I was reading the install instruction of my deltagate wastegate and it says that no gasket should be utilized in mounting on the cast exhaust manifold. On my star kit, I received two gaskets and thus used both of them. Should I have not used a gasket in between the manifold and wastegate?

BTW, who here is using the wastegate in deltagate mode? (the vacuum port is plumbed into the intake manifold)?

it's just a gasket. I used mine. It's not going to hurt anything. I am also running my wastegate plumbed to the nipple on the turbo compressor housing. I ran it without and didn't notice any difference.

Darkone, you have it running in "wastegate" mode..

I'm planning on plumbing the vacuum port to the intake manifold...call me paranoid, I just don't want to detonate! My car not being able to start was already scary enough...

1212, No i don't..

It's running in Deltagate mode. I gets boost straight from the turbo rather than the intake manifold.

to get deltagate mode don't you plumb both openings on the wastegate?

there is only one opening on the wastegate. Its a 90* fitting, if i remember correctly.

Question regarding your wastegates: where does the discharge go? Does it vent into the atmosphere or back into the exhaust system?
1216, wastegate vent
Posted by 95ESi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
heheheheh...well to be emission legal, we should vent to back into exhaust pipe.

But right now I have it venting to atmostphere.

To vent back to exhaust pipe would require some custom welding...nothing too impossible. :)

leon:

Your system is equipped to vent back into exhaust, but you are not using this feature?
1218, Not quite ...
Posted by DarkOne, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
He's speaking of the "Deltagate" feature in the wastegates included with the Star kit. It has a fitting for vacuum, as well as one for boost. In a high load situation, it is possible for the turbo to spin up due to the increased exhaust energy from the load, but to still have a vacuum condition at the manifold. From what i understand, this is bad, so the wastegate compensates by sensing the boosted condition at the turbo and the vacuum condition at the manifold and opening to vent some exhaust energy. The dumptube from Star just drops down about six inches from the manifold and stops.

Until i have to pass inspection, then i'll likely have it welded back into the downpipe.

Keep this in mind: at 10 PSI boost, that's at least 10 PSI of 1600 degree destruction blowing out of that wastegate! For this reason, most race sanctioning bodies have made it mandatory to route this "torch" back into the main exhaust. They (and I) have seen what can happen if ya don't!

If you will never see a racetrack, no worries. But keep an eye open for heavy meltage.

The friggin thing is angled perfectly to point straight at a freeze plug in my block :-)

Bill, did you ever reply with the full price of the inline fuel pump, with all the fittings and goodies? Wasn't it $235 or something?

HRC, i really wanna say thanx. it's always a better day when you decide to check our board. :-)

1222, boost and vacuum port
Posted by 95ESi, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
If you look at the wastegate, you should see two ports: a boost port and a vacuum port.

The boost port is to the side of the wastegate.
The vacuum port is on the top of the wastegate. There's also some bevelled wording that says "VACUUM" too... =)

Does yours not say that too? OR did I get a different wastegate..

1223, here are the two openings I am referring too:

Look at the two 1/8" FPT openings..

the top one is for vacuum, the side one is for boost.....

There IS another hole. I had to go pop my hood just to make sure. Crazy shit. I guess i should do something about that ... LoL Thanks 95ESi ! I'd never have noticed if you hadn't pointed that out to me! Where did you get the schematic ?

So as I was saying, who here is running their wastegate in deltagate mode (both ports are plumbed) ?

I got that schematic diagram from

i will be, as soon as i get another NPT fitting for that hole. i never even knew that was there. Also, 95ESi, i'm not so sure that would effect your chances of detonation. It maily has to do with controlling the load on the turbo, as to not damage it, rather than your motor. it basically vents exhaust if an excesive load is placed on the turbo due to a steep climb or lugging it at WOT at 2000 RPM in fifth gear or something.

hmm...this is interesting...i have often wondered what the point of that vaccum opening is. No internal wastegates come with a separate vaccum opening as well as boost. My only thought on this is, wouldn't that vaccum pull the wastegate open even at idle? Because basically that wastgate has too chambers and a diaphragm in between. Boost pushes the wastegate open from one side, so i would assume vaccum would open the wastegate on the other side of the diaphragm. If anyone else has ever cracked open their wastegate, they will see what i mean. I don't know if that vaccum that is seen at idle/deccelleration is enough to open it or not. I am curious if anyone has tried this or not.

My other concern is that you would have a wastegate that theoretically wouldn't open under boost because you would have roughly the same amount of pressure pushing on both sides of the diaphragm that opens the gate. Unless you use some form of check valve to make sure it only sees vaccuum. I don't know, seems like way too much work since to get the gate to work properly, all you need to do is hook it up to the boost source fitting on the bottom and run that to the turbo boost outlet barb.

Well the instruction diagrams I got shows that both are plumbed...no check valves or anything...
