Hey Guys, I'm about ready to order my HRC stage II. I know that anyone who's mechanicly inclined shouldn't have a problem intalling it, but I'm wondering if I have all the right tools? I know I need a hacksaw to cut the downpipe. Any other special mods that have to be done for the install?

I need to know this because I have to get this installation done as quickly as I can. I was going to take my time and drive my Cherokee around while the car was in the garage. But, my jeep was stolen a couple days ago so now I have no x-tra wheels!

We don't have to drill a hole in the oil pan do we?
Also, since I've heard that the HRC FPR sucks, should I just try to convince HRC to not send me theirs, and just buy a different one to begin with? Or, are their FPR's no worse than any others out there?

Some people have problems with the HRC fpr idle pressure fluxuating, but I havent had any problems. If you can get a credit from HRC on that fpr, I would do that and get the vortech s-fmu with the proper calibration disk. The general consensis is that it is significantly more reliable and more tune-friendly.

You will have to drill a hole in the oil pan and install a fitting for the return line from the turbo. It isn't very difficult to do, just make sure that you do it in the proper location. Someone not too long ago posted a picture of exactly where to mount the fitting... I dont know if you run a search if you will be able to find it or not. I just used the HRC instructions and didn't have any problems.

Also the oil return line hose that hrc includes in their kit is way too short to properly install it in place. Go to pep boys or an autostore and get at least 2 feet of insulated and reinforced heater hose instead.

Also go to homedepot and buy a bit for your power drill that cuts the hole on the oil pan for the right size.

you'll need all kind of sizes of metric wrenches and sockets....get a 22mm wrench to remove the o2 sensor from your downpipe for when you saw it as well.

Hey Kiku, you could actually just unplug the O2 sensor from a plug-harness about 12 inches up. Then plug it back up after you cut up the D/P.

And don't foret about the Schrader tool (or tire valve stem tool) which takes out the high pressure valve from the fuel rail service fitting.

btw, while you're still in the "force" get your airframe and power plat license with you gi bill cause they will cost you the price of a stage 2 when you get out. i work for delta and the mechanics here make 22 an hour starting off.

Well, it's not what you think. I'm a engine mechanic, crewchiefs work on the rest of the plane. I'm not active duty either. I am in the Oregon Air guard, but I work for them full-time as a technician. I make way more bucks than active duty people (been in a year and a half and make $20.13 an hour). This makes a lot of active duty people mad because they never knew about that side of the guard when they enlisted. We don't have an auto center on my base so I'm just going to have to clear out the garage.

I was thinking about an A & P license, but now with all the layoffs there is no demand for those mechanics. I'll stick with the guard and retire in 30 years.

hmmm....that's odd i never heard of a backshop mechanic getting paid hourly. might have to do some research on that. and as for the lay-offs. hahaha. sure all the other airlines are going down but Delta's already starting to make a come back. in the past when other airlines went down Delta has always recovered. but they should be hireing back up in another year. VERY little people have been layed-off from Delta after sept. 11th. but it's all in what you wanna do. just lettin ya know some of ya options partna. but the starion intercooler.....hmmm....i've been thinking about getting one for my GSX. hell if you can't get it to bolt on....talk it to your local muffler shop and have 'em throw a couple spot weld on it. but as far as bumper clearance you shouldn't have any problems. i also think the 420a guys have to modify the tubes to go the opposite direction due to the throttle body being opposite side of the 4g63 which the starion intercooler was designed for. but hadesomega would know more about that. he's got some pics and everything of the whole process.

Couldn't you just turn the intercooler around so the tubes face the opposite direction?

In the guard we get paid by the State Government. Not by rank, but by what your job is and how long you been working there. Crew chiefs in the gaurd are two pay grades higher than I am. They start out almost $20 an hour, and just goes up from there.

I was wondering the same thing about the intercoolers. I noticed that turbo fmic inlets and outlets face the left while ours need to face the right, couldnt you just flip those intercoolers over?

Yes. That is how we use the ApexI FMIC. It is flipped backwards with some modifications to the mounting brackets.

That's what I did. Flipped it around and have one of the outlets enlarged and moved.

That's it. You can't tell which side is the "front" on the starion IC.
