11593, Downsides of turbo? (for all you turboed 420a's)

For those of you that have turbos in your car... Are there any downsides to having the turbo?

Do you have to be careful of certain things more?

High maintenance required?

I was talkin Jeff_99gs and he was saying that it was a pain driving the car uphill. Anyone else having problems with that too?

I'd like to know these things from you vets, because when i drive, after work and stuff, i'm pretty braindead, and the last thing I want to have to worry about is concentrating on my car (let alone concentrating on the road. heh).

The only downside is probably little things, like vac leaks and boost leaks that just take time to find.
As far as going up hill, my car loves it, my car pulls like crazy uphill and just flys by everyone.

Actually I found myself after putting on the turbo just every now and then glance over at my guages and listening to the engine, after a year now its routine, just like looking around you when you drive. It becomes second nature to keep aware of how your cars running. Also you kinda pick up a maintainance routine aswell, its just like when your n/a and you just like to tinker on your car, its just now you have more to tinker:)

Thats how I look at it.

Yeah, my car flies uphill too.. but my EGTs fly towards 1600 at the same time.

If you are going uphills on the highway with lots of boost and no EGT gauge, you are going to be getting some dangerously high temperatures in your engine.

It really isnt too different except for the speed and power. I do glance at my gauges all the time though just to make sure everything is going ok. There are a lot more good things about turbos than bad things. It doesnt take a rocket scientist either to drive the car. If you can read a clock then you can read a EGT gauge.

Listen to these guys...they know what there talking about. The main thing I noticed is the sound:-) IT'S BAD ASS!!!! You hear the turbo spool up...sssssszzzzzzzzzzzz....and the blow off valve...phhhhhshshshshshshshshshs. You will look like this everytime you drive...:-) And you will find yourself looking under your hood for no apperent reason:P

Turbo...never leave home without it.

stage 1 or 2, should have no probs, jsut bolt on and run... maby some vac leaks now and then, and silly shit like that, but no probs... now setup like me and your in for a world of hurt if you cant work on a car... My car always has something I want to fix or change, but nothing goes wrong other than vac leaks and gasket leaks... the rewards of boost suprass the cost and minor probs you have along the way....

all the leaks can get a lil anoying, but I must say I learn something new aobut my car almost daily and that makes the lil things worth it.

Thanks guys, i feel a little more at ease now.. probably still be a while before i can afford one. (unless i rob a bank... see thread on that.. heh.)

So are the leaks a big deal, or are they fairly simple to fix?

just a matter of tightening the clamps so that air does not leak out..
fairly simple fixes. and as always if you are stumped, We are all here to help.

another downside is the fuel pump, it's loud. mine is tolerable most of the time but sometimes, it get's rather annoying. i haven't had any problems yet, and it's been almost 2500 turbo miles!

Downsides of boost? nothing. Only thing I can think of is gas mileage.
11609, RE: Downsides of turbo? (for all you turboed 420a's)

yeah gas milage sucks! just stay outta boost(which is hard around town) but 93 octane is expensive. thank god gas prices came down a lot!

Ya know I was wondering that myself

Just got my Stage 2 today!!!

Exhaust Gas Temp. I think.

EGT = Exhaust Gas Temperature
Too High of an EGT means your engine may be at dangerous heat levels. At dangerous egt levels detonation can occur. Detonation = bad.

If you have a bolt on turbo... you really should have egt, a/f (check out corbin's a/f guage), and boost guages.

I've never heard of crank walk on the 420 A (but that doesnt mean it hasnt happend). Wasnt there a recall on some 4g63's built certain times between 97 and 99? Could be mistaken.
