11197, checked my plugs last night Posted by jamesman, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
hey everyone, after a month of being turbo i checked my plugs, they looked kind of dark brown, almost rust colored, no erosion or loose metallic particles or wetness, just a matte rust color on them, does this mean i am running rich? or lean? or just right? i always thought that dark deposits meant rich, but i never seen this brownish color before! thanks james

When i took out my plugs they looked the same way. I heard that might mean your running lean, but i don't know for sure.

a light brown/rust color is the perfect color you want, they sound okay to me.
but you should get an air/fuel meter (digital) to make sure, that should be the first thing and a EGT that you get even before the turbo went in

i have both...just was wondering cause when i was N/A my plugs were tan, a very light brown tan color, but now they are darker, and reddish like rust color, i did change to one heat range lower when i went turbo, maybe that is where the color is coming from? thanks for the info?

In my experiance, that rust red color comes from fuel additives: Octane booster, injector cleaner, etc. Typically, black or oily means rich, tan to grey is just right, light grey to white is lean.

How does the heat range thing work? 1 heat range colder right? I am running stock ones right now(BKR6E-11 Stock No. 2756) cause the zex plugs suck ass and I cant find any good NGK's. So one heat range colder would be 5's? I though 7's were what turbo guys were using?

6=stock heat range 7=one range colder recommended for turbo cars 5=one range hotter and works well for n/a cars gapped to .050

I actually change my plugs every oil change and can tell the difference in idle smoothness. I am very hard on my motor and consistantly have it near redline while practicing for upcoming events. My plugs look kind of of dark gray in color. My insulators always look burnt around the lower part of the plug even after only 3K. I buy mine from O-Reilly autoparts for $1.60 per plug. I cannot afford not to change them often. DeanoD 1997RS-NeverTurbo #62 STS SCCA Arkansas Region http://arscca.org
